I know we must cram our games together, but...

Arcades cramming them together saved most of them from vandals. Seems like whenever I saw single games or a low number of games at a store or something they always had something carved into them. Most arcades I remember had them tight together.

Two other ideas...

I've heard that some areas had laws against number of games per linear foot, or total games within a certain area (anti-arcade laws)...

Also, possibly laws surrounding ADA compliance or fire code?

These are nothing we have to worry about in personal arcade settings.

That said, almost all arcades around here had them packed in. One had angled walls that two or three games would fit against, made better use of the floor space and looked cool.

A lot of it has to do with how many games a place had, vs. how much space they had.

If you have less games, you space them out to look nicer. If you have more games, (Which owners preferred, since that brought in more $$$) you simply fit them as needed.

Most arcades I went to - with the exception of Golf N Stuff, which was HUGE - had games right next to each other.

In the arcades I remember, most of the machines would be side-to-side. New machines would get special treatment, with space around them (probably to accommodate the people who would crowd around to watch).

Otherwise, I usually only saw the sides at places that just had one or two games.
