I just bought WWF Superstars, its seems to work fine, but the cabinet is in bad shape. Tetris is supposed to work, but the guy had them out overnight in the back of his truck with a tarp over them so its a little damp. I'm letting it dry out before I try it.

I also got a game called "Knights of the Round". When we picked it up, the cabinet fell apart, but I kept the all the stuff, the monitor, board, etc. He said it worked, too, but I haven't tried it yet, either. I will probably buy a cabinet for it, or possibly trade it after I make sure it works. The guy I got them from is known to my family and is a trustworthy guy, so everything he says should be true. I got them at a steal, also.

A little background: I am married, with 2 teenage boys. My husband is a good handyman and my son just started college to be an electrician. My son is really good at working on stuff like this, so between the 3 of us, we should be able to restore them. We have a huge 'game room' in our house. When we bought it we made sure to get a place with a huge room for a game room. My husband loved going to the arcades in his teens in the 80's and both my boys are into gaming, so this room was really important to us.

We are just now starting to furnish it, and these are our first arcade games. We don't have a lot of money to spend on them, so we decided on finding them and restoring them ourselves. Plus, it will be a good learning experience for my boys.

I am cruising these boards finding all kinds of great info! You guys have some talented people on here!

My first question is:

We are starting with WWF Superstars, since its in the best shape. The paint is peeling on the edges of the cabinet and the stickers are faded and scratched. When its pulled off, its plain particle board. Is there a covering or something you put on before painting? Like, how do I get from rough particle board to a smooth finish? If I just paint it, it will still be all rough, what is used to make it like the original stuff? I know I'm not saying this right, lol, but I don't know any other way to put it. And none of us are any good at painting, but I'm sure I can learn. I have painted some in the house, and it turned out great, so I should be able to do this, as long as I make sure to get the right supplies.

I'm sure we will have many more questions, but this is really baffling me!

Welcome aboard. My first piece of advice to newbies is always "stay away from the monitor" until you learn how to properly discharge it.

Anyway I believe all those games are "kits" only, meaning they didnt come in original cabinets, so your games were likely other games before. They are all JAMMA (meaning all 3 of your boardsets use the same wire harness and should work in both of your cabinets). If you'r just going to use 2 cabinets, I would play all 3 games in the 2 cabs you have, then decide which ones you like before you decide what to restore. You never know, you might like Knights of the Round and decide to put that in one of your cabs.

As far as restoring, get a good belt sander and get 'em smoothed out. Then decide if youd rather paint or put on a laminate.

I would make sure you have 2 types of sanders...a belt sander is nice, but easy to over do. Having another one like an orbital or a Mouse can be quite helpful. It's tough to sand down particleboard to get it completely smooth, so you may need to do a thin layer of Bondo/wood filler/spackling and re-sand to make it smooth. Then throw on a coat or 2 of primer before final painting. Large broken pieces should be filled with Bondo.
