So I chose to get personalized plates for my new truck. When I got the license plates in the mail Saturday, I was surprised to find that the "UW Madison" and "Bucky Badger" were both clear stickers that I had to put on the plates myself???? What the heck?

Here's the plate with the stickers still on the white paper backing - I have just placed them for the photo. I have not peeled them off and stuck them down yet.

I'm thinking to myself....why would I bother putting the image of Bucky Badger on there? I should just print something myself! Maybe a Galaga Ship? Mortal Kombat Logo?

What should I put there?

Having never had a personalized plate, I don't know how common that is... but damn, that's pretty damn CHEAP-ASS considering what they typically charge you on top of your normal registration every year...

...and I wonder if it's legal to put something other than what they send you? If it is, I'd consider an arcade cabinet to the left... and maybe "4-LIFE" or something below?

This is an option in NH as well and they refer to them as Decal Plates. Basically, it's a way to keep costs low on "custom" plates because the base plate isn't custom, its generic. In my case it's a quazi implemented Fire Department plate for Volunteer crews that show up in their POVs.

NH DMV began offering our newest plate type, the Decal Plate. Decal plates resemble regular New Hampshire passenger license plate however, they include a 3"x3" blank square on the left side of the plate. This allows for the placement of a special decal issued by a 501(c)(3) organization authorized by legislature. Legislatively authorized organizations may sell decals for a cost. Decals are NOT available at DMV locations, they have to be purchased directly from the legislatively authorized 501(c)(3) organizations.

It's not officially recognized as a plate for a FD vehicle but you can't get the sticker without sign-off from your Fire Chief. The sticker is delivered via a 3rd party, in this case the New Hampshire State Firemens Association.

I'm betting (based upon the NH language above) that you might actually get cited for putting a unapproved sticker/image on there.

At $40 extra every year for vanity plates here in NH, the whole system is simply a money making en devour and nothing more, after the stamping process there are no extra costs involved for the state.

They do charge less for the Decal plates per year ($15) but for those of us who voluneer it's another unreimbursed cost. Plus, there is a yearly decal fee which benefits NH Fallen Firefighters Memorial, which I'm all for, and why I really picked up the Plate in the first place.

Decal Plates are available for a $15 fee per year in addition to the town and state registration fees. Decal Vanity Plates are also available for an additional $40 vanity plate fee. An additional $8.00 plate manufacturing fee is only required in the first year of purchase.

I'd agree that 1) your state pulled a fast one charging extra for that, 2) after paying for personalized plates if that's what they're gonna do then I'd absolutely print up and use anything I damn well please, and 3) it won't stop some douche bag from peeling the sticker off your plate when you're not around because they want it (or just to be a douche bag), which will be even more infuriating.

With the adhesive they use on the FD ones, it isn't coming off without a fight. I suppose if you had a heat gun and a putty knife you might get it off but it's going to be work for sure.

That's a new level of cheapness. In NY they're already printed onto the plate. Def put a custom decal on there. "Sorry officer, I thought it was optional."

ugh buckey badger....

my sister lives in madison so I have a drawer full of bucky badger gifts.

F*ck him.. I would cut his head off and then stick him on upside down as a conversation piece with the locals.
