Whats up with the import tax? I mean come on, is it REALLY that much? How much tax would you have to pay on a $100.00 item? $1000.00 item?

I ask because I've recently started selling stuff worldwide. After payment is made (usually a day or so after), I get emails asking me to low ball the value of the package. My problem with that is that I've already done all the paper work and paid for the shipping via USPS so if I have to do it over I'm going to be out that original shipping amount or I have to poke around the USPS for a refund (and thats fun to do).

Why not PAY the tax? I have to pay tax on stuff that I buy...

We have to pay both a federal government sales tax 5% (gst) and a provincial sales tax 5% (pst) when we buy something out of Canada, so I would be paying $10.00. Don't worry about me, I won't try and lowball you on your price, maybe ask for free shipping. he he

Alright, Canada is 10%. Thats kinda what I expected.

Anyone else?

Brazil has to pay an obscene amount of tax on imported items - I've been told it's can be as high as 50% of the value of the item.

If I sell something through my website, there is supporting documentation shipped with it so any value on the outside of the box is the same as the supporting documentation (packing receipt). I do NOT mark the outside value differently than what the documentation says.

That's a quick way to get blackballed by Customs and have major headaches.

I tell every customer that when they want to order a large amount of chips and ask me to do that.

When i buy items in the US i always ask if the "total value (US$)" can be kept under $13
If the value of the item is over 85DKK ($16,97) ill have to pay import tax (25% of the item _AND_ the shipping...!!!!!), and in order to pay the import tax there´s a fee of 125DKK ($24,96)...

So lets say i buy a marquee $21 + shipping $19

payed with paypal: $40
import tax: $10 (item + shipping)
fee: $24,96
tax of fee: $6,24

Total: $77,20 (Pretty expensive Marquee!)

In the UK you get charged 15%, and then it gets doubled for the customs handling charge.

30% is usually a conservative estimate. It usually sits around the 40% mark.

So for a $100 dollar item I will pay $40 tax. and yes $400 on a $1000.

I got stung once when the item value was only $100, but the sender put the value of the item at $100 + the $150 it cost to ship. They taxed me on the insured value...

I ended up paying just over $100 tax on a $250 item..

It's a god damn law to itself in the UK - very very unfair - I always ask people to underprice the item and I just pay extra for tracking.

Let it be noted ! Gamefixer is very likely the first American I have come across that has NO problem with taxes and he's from TEXAS !!!!

We don't want to pay because we already get taxed to death over here !

I'd like to know your opinion about our 50% income tax for instance.(depending on what you earn it can be less or more).
Or 19% VAT.

The only "problem" for you is filling in another figure. And that it's a gift and don't include any bills.

The biggest issue is that compared to the value charged for taxes, the actual cost of the handling of the declaration is SO disproportional.

Anyway, I applaud the fact you are willing to actually sell outside the US as many others think it's too much hassle.

Hell, about 40% of my parts sales comes from overseas... Even with $12.95 USD for USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate Shipping I'm told that it's cheaper than buying in nearby EU countries.

Do you realize that it is too much hassle because we are asked to lie which to many, including myself,is an unethical act. If someone askes me to do something unethical I can't trust them. If I can't trust you why should I believe that you aren't going to screw me on the deal? It creates a situation that I don't want any part of...

I guess your place in heaven is already reserved.

I've bought a zillion parts and stuff from the US for this hobby and ask anyone who have dealt with me if I can be trusted. That should tell a bit more about me than your assumptions.

I have no desire to waste eternity in heaven...

My assumptions are completely rooted in reality and it is what it is. I doubt that I currently have anything you'd want but I will not lie about it. Many other people have similar ethics to my own...

It's unethical to assist a fellow KLOVian with not getting screwed by their government?

I think it would be unethical to assist said government with the screwing.

One might argue that is guilt by association; you are aiding and abetting a system that is unethical by it's very nature - over taxation.

Level42 - just buy your stuff from people in New Hampshire; they have no income or sales taxes!

Don't count on that lasting much longer. We have become a "Blue" state and unless we the people act fast, we'll become the annex of Taxachusetts or worse Maine!

As far as devaluation of the part to skip out on the taxes, that is something I couldn't do as well. If there is an insurance claim, the item is now worth a fraction of the price due to the devaluation. That and the taxes are there for a reason, YOU put them there (unless you live in a total dictatorship) and those taxes go for something the majority in your country (or state) felt needed to be funded by those taxes.

I wouldn't expect anything else from a state that has the motto "Live free, or die".....

Maybe it would be better to move to NH ! As close to Funspot as possible !

It has been way too long since I've been there....I want to go back !!!

I look at it like this...

I'm not breaking any laws by putting the wrong value on the item. They are.

So fuck the TarSANDburning commies.
