I Hate the Ebay

That sucks Magog. Sorry to hear about that.

Thanks man, the guy has a ton of negative feedback and neutral feedback in the last month. He is down arounde 95%, and is selling items with copyrighted images and brand logos without permission he won't be long for ebay.

The Sniping software makes sense, but I simply don't trust a third party with my ebay info. Tooo many scams running online these days. I don't trust the ones you pay for, and I really don't trust the ones that are free. Guess, I just have trust issues. ;)

Isn't it ironic that the person willing to pay more than anyone else is considered the "winner"?

Sounds like the very definition of a fool, if you ask me.

And yes, I have been a fool on many ebay occasions!

eBay is dying. Our eBay sales are down 60% to 80%. During the peek season there would be 11000 items in our section and now there is 40000 items. Ebay has taken the fun out of it also with the BUY IT NOW deal. Auctions were fun. We used to do 40000 a month and now we do do 4 to 6000 a month.

Maybe for your specific situation but have you looked at their financial statements lately? Their net income was $2.4 BILLION in 2009 and 1.8 BILLION in 2008 .. not bad for a recession.

Without snipe
1. I'm willing to pay $500 for an item so I enter that bid
2. Someone keeps bidding in small increments until they hit $501
3. You lose out by $1
...

Big picture - the "winner" was still willing to pay more than you. Period. Whether it was in an attempt to "beat" you (by "winning" an overpriced item and screwing themselves), or a snipe or other valid bid they put in at ANY time, that was $1 more than yours. Regardless of how or when they reach that final bid, the end result is still the same no matter how you slice it - Whoever is willing to pay the most, wins. The only difference now is "bid reactions" - you don't get any. You bid what you're willing to pay. You don't see what someone else is willing to pay and base your bid on that, you either know you want it, or you don't. Guess what? That's what the snipers do, too.

The only effect sniping has had on my eGay activity is watching a bunch of fools pay way too much for things (and of course this has led to an increasing number of second chance offers). I've always bid near the end of auctions to prevent others from being enticed by "someone else thinks it's worth it, or not broken," but again, that is no change.

Whether you get 10 bids in 5 days, or 10 bids in the last minute, it's still the same people on the other ends of those, willing to pay the same amount they always have.

Disclaimer : The above has been a personal experience-based OPINION, not a debate starter. The more you know.

Yes, they were willing to pay more, but if you sniped (as shown in my example), you not force them to keep bidding. Many, many people will place a bid a forget about it or not get a chance to get back and rebid. Why push them to increase the price early on?

You guys keep arguing the benefits of snipe bids, and I'll keep on winning more bids at a lower price by using it.

Got the Ebay ap on my driod... I won an auction, while at daughters piano lessons, tonight on a X arcade panel in the last 10 seconds after someone sniped me.

Getting a smart phone was a tough decision, its a lot of extra coin, but it does come in really handy.

There's a really easy way to not get sniped. Just bid your highest bid. If you want the item bad enough, you won't care about inching your way up to the final price.

If I get the time, I sometimes try to snipe an auction. But if it's something I truly want, I put up my absolutely highest bid. One penny more means I don't want it. Easy peasy.

Absolutely! And unless it's a super rare item, you will come across it again. It's all about timing and patience.

I was outbid twice on a Vampire Savior board.Put a max bid of $85 on the first auction, got sniped for $86.Put a limit of $90 on the next one, ended up going for $100.The third time I put a limit of $91 on it and I win it for $46.:)

And in regards to sniping....from my ebay experience, you only get it cheaper if there is little to no sniping competition. If there are many people watching the item with the intent to snipe it,it will usually go for more (or a lot more) than you wanted to pay.

Ok, what If I put in my highest price within the last 5 min?

How does that work out?

Also, they should just do it like a real auction... Take bids, then if you have a bid in the last 5 minutes, then it goes up for another set amount of time (perhaps locking it down to only people who had previously bid).

Not if you're bidding against me you won't. Whenever I bid, I bid what I'm willing to pay. You want it? You've gotta want it more than I do. If that's a mere 50 cent more, then so be it - I set my limits and stick to them - but don't think you'll get it for next to nothing if I'm bidding.

You are missing the point.... Yes if someone always enters the amount they are willing to pay then it's simply whoever wanted the item more.

HOWEVER

NOT everyone does this... There are plenty of flapjacked, uneducated, don't know nothing about the internet or ebay people that treat it like a LIVE auction. They bid until they are the high bidder and stop. Then you swoop in and snipe them and they have no idea what happened. If you put in your highest bid against someone like that at the beginning of the auction you will pay more, Period.

IN ADDITION

You are setting yourself up to get scammed by shady sellers, they can have one of their friends bid against you and find out what your max is. Then they pull their bid out, then another friend bids on the item JUST before your max bid. Sound Great??? Fantastic Right?? Still like your strategy?? It's fools bidding.

I just lost a little faith in humanity after reading this.

Except --- it's never happened. Every time someone has bid me up to find my max (and it's happened more than once), they've topped my max and taken the item.

So yea, theory says I CAN get scammed, but it turns out that if you don't bid on stuff sold by guys with a 90% feedback rating, it doesn't come up very much - the kind of guys who do that stuff also do other shit (bad descriptions, failure to ship, etc, etc) that gives them a noticeably lower feedback rating.

You have to use your head! You have to turn on the bullshit detector and pass over auctions that don't look right - even if you REALLY want it. Even if it is a REALLY good price on an apparently REALLY good piece.

And you must NEVER, EVER succumb to auction fever - you CAN NOT get invested in getting an item. ALWAYS be prepared to lose without getting freaked out.

The biggest problem most people seem to have is the same one they have in voice auctions - they get invested in the item and they go way over what it's worth.

Excellent post and that pretty much sums it up correctly.

What I've learned about eBay is this: You aren't going to get an "unbelievable deal" on anything that anybody else wants. You won't get a Dragon's Lair, mint condition, for $100. Somebody else will see it and bid also.

The only time you are going to get an "unbelievable deal" is on something nobody else wants anymore, like a Barry Bonds rookie card. You could probably get one for $10 right now. Also, don't talk to me about that. All my "valuable" baseball cards of my youth are tainted by the steroids scandal. However, if anybody does want a Barry Bonds rookie card, I could totally hook you up. Let's trade, for a Dragon's Lair maybe? :)

I agree with you. I usually 'snipe' by hand, but what it comes down to is who's willing to pay more for an item? I've bought and sold so many things in my life that long ago I stopped getting upset when someone was willing to pay more for an inanimate piece of plastic than I am.
