Atari System 1 (Marble Madness) speaker grill wasn't in good shape. It was suggested I use paint stripper and clean it all up. So off I went... strip away!

I hate paint stripping. Perhaps I'm just no good at it. After 3 attempts each letting the stripper sit for 15m, then 30m then 60m...

1) Black paint sludge just got stuck in the grill holes
2) Stripper didn't eat away at the paint that was already clogging the grill holes

I ended up poking the paint out of each hole 1-by-1.

So I ask... Typical or did I just do it all wrong?

I put StripEez, which is nasty stuff, on an original finish coin door and it did pretty much nothing. I ended up using a sander and taking it down to the metal everywhere possible. Don't feel too bad.

Don't feel bad or get down on yourself about it, a lot of this stuff requires elbow grease and is a plain P-I-T-A.

I just bought a soda blaster at Harbor Freight for $79.00 after 20% coupon. Best purchase I've made for stripping paint. Gets everything in the cracks.

I think im going to look more into that, have you done a cab or coin door with it as thats what I will use it for

What's good to use for stripping paint off of plexi? I have a Tron that has the front plexi below the control panel painted black, and I don't want to damage it.

I stripped a coin door and the speaker grills on a Midway cocktail yesterday. It doesn't do rust well, but it works like magic on paint. Extremely messy though. Lot's of dust. Definately an outside job. Check youtube for videos on soda blasting.

Supposedly the soda blaster can be used for that as well, but I haven't tried it yet. I give it a shot this evening and see how bad it scratches it up. I'll take some photos as well.

Where did you get the coupon?

is the media available from chain home improvement stores, or do i need to have the heavy expendable stuff shipped to me?

CitriStrip is amazing!!!
Doesn't smell bad either.

I have to agree. I bought a glass door Coke cooler very cheaply off Craigslist because it was pretty nasty looking. The inside was filthy and the outside had been painted black over the nice Coke red color. I used Citristrip to get all the black paint off the sides, back, and top of the cooler and now the old red color is coming through and looks great. Simple Green and Clorox Cleanup w/Bleach to clean everything did the job.

I just need to have the refrigeration parts looked at because it isn't getting very cold; likely just needs to have everything checked out thoroughly and the refrigerant recharged.

Where did you get the coupon?

They've been including them the last few weeks in their newspaper flyers.

And I've been wondering how to use the ones I've been saving. I think a soda blaster might be under my Christmas tree....

Stopped by my local store today - they had the 10# units reduced to less than $60, and several of the 15# units. but they had no soda 'media'. Didn't really know what i was looking for, and they were too busy to help. I may stop back early next week, but does anyone have any recommendations for where to purchase the soda powder?

I got mine at the HF store. It's on sale right now and then 20% off makes it about $25.00 per bag. It's just a big brown bag that has an Arm & Hammer symbol on it and says something about baking soda media on it. The bag I bought was wrapped in shrink wrap. I assume that was to keep it from leaking everywhere. It wasn't near the display at my store it was on a shelf on a different aisle.

I saw the price drop on the 10lb version. They might as well just give it away.
