My Sega Master System adventure

Tell me what you think of this. I went to a multi-sale yesterday... pretty much looking for cheap games and a Master System. I found the cheap games first, but one was kinda strange. It was Ridge Racer for PS1 but it was in a plastic case like Sega CD and Saturn. I got it for $4 and had never seen a PS1 game like that before.

Then I found someone that was selling a Master System. I got it for $24 and also traded that Ridge Racer game.

The brick that came with the SMS does not work (tested with multimeter) so I do not know if the unit works yet.

Even if it does work, do you think I did a good deal there or did I screw up since I didn't look up that Ridge Racer first?

A lot of 1st gen SMS don't work these days, I think it is a fuse just like how the Sega CD breaks. I have a CL buy SMS that doesn't work and I haven't had a chance to fix it yet.

Be careful if you do open it, the plastic on those cases are SUPER brittle.

OK great. I took it apart and will have to test the voltage regulator to see if I need to replace it. I was unsuccessful at finding a power brick so far, but I have a Westell one that should work.

That site is pretty cool, I love stuff like that.

I remember having a "long box" Battle Arena Toshinden 1, Twisted Metal 1, Warhawk, Ridge Racer and Wing Commander III.

At the time obviously I didn't think anything special of them, and since sold or traded them. Fun to read about them now though.

I thought they were awesome at the time - I preferred them, I think, since I already had Sega CD games and stuff on the shelf. I really liked the non-jewel case ones, like the ones in the second column on that page. Once they started making them in the cardboard boxes (third column), I didn't care for them anymore. I think I have one of each kind left, the rest of my games are all the standard CD jewel cases. IIRC, I have MK3 in the first style (game I got with the system), Warhawk in the second style, and NBA In The Zone in the third style.

Replaced the voltage regulator only to discover a horrible truth. The DC adapter that works with this unit (as well as the Genesis Model 1 and either Sega CD units) has the positive on the outside of the connector. This is unlike any power brick I have laying around, regardless of whether it could physically connect to the Power Base or not.

You can see an adapter breakdown here:
http://www.gametrog.com/GAMETROG/Ho..._mk-1602_mk-2103_mk-1479_mk-4122_aa-s95j.html

Including a fairly clear picture of the SMS (MK-3025) adapter which clearly shows that inside is - and outside is +. So its going to be sitting around the office until I can find the appropriate adapter.

And hopefully I didn't smoke the new voltage regulator after plugging in the adapter, but if so I did buy 2 at Radio Shack last night.

The MK-3025 power supply was only released with the Master System, so it is fairly uncommon.

The MK-1602 power supply on the other hand is very common.
If you find a model 1 Genesis, chances are it will have that plug.
Flea markers and old pawn shops usually have these laying around as well.

If you have trouble finding one, I can supply you with one.

I'm going to hit up the flea market this weekend hopefully.

But its not always true. I do have a model 1 Genesis and it didn't come with anything! :p

You can also use the power supply from the Sega Activator, and who doesn't have 2 or 3 of those laying around?

Thanks I didn't know that.

I have 2 Model 1 Genesis lots incoming, so the PSU issue should be set.

And it is! But that's not all... Ok so it turns on now and I can see the post message, but it doesn't see a game. Also if I just tap the console/power button, it will reset. So looks like maybe I should replace at least the power switch. Its unfortunate that I can't test this thing at work... unless you know a good RF to VGA adapter. xD
