I get to do an Ignite speech about "Pinball: A Game Of Skill"

Pretty cool. Ignite events feature speakers that get 5 minutes and 20 slides that flip every 15 seconds to talk about something before an audience. The previous 2 ignite Lincoln events have been a huge success. I feel honored to be invited to participate when many folks had to apply.

I was recruited as a featured speaker by the guy who runs it in my city of Lincoln, NE. He heard about my arcade through friends and swung by one afternoon. Apparently my enthusiasm about pinball while he was over made an impact. I initially was so excited and then got a bit scared, but they accepted me and I get to do it.

Ignite Lincoln site

My bare bones plan:

minute 1: explain my love for pinball, past to current. Explain how I really never learned any skills till 10 years after owning my own machines >.<

minute 2: my main goal of describing pinball being about control and avoiding randomness

minute 3-4: talk about a few control techniques with the slides backing me up, The beef of my presentation

last minute: promote my google pinball map, places to play around town including Omaha, and resources for folks who want to get better.

Here is an Ignite pinball presentation from Greg Dunlap: How to not suck at pinball

I do not look to recreate his presentation, but some things will be repeated.

I pretty much have my idea down, but hoped maybe yall might have suggestions. Would love some great oneliners about pinball I can mix in.

You need a screencap of that one guy that plays crazy..who was that in that movie..was it Lyman Sheats? Moving all over the place like he was trying the "Move like a butterfly, sting like a bee" thing with a pinball machine?

Just grab a screencap of him like in midair or ducked down real low and be like "And this is what we're trying to avoid."

If you are doing a "Game of Skill" lecture, be sure you include why it is called that. You would be missing out if you did not mention Roger Sharpe's court appearence in NY where he called a shot and hit that shot, thereby proving in a court of law that Pinball was, in fact, a "Game of Skill" That then allowed pinball back in that state.

BAM

Great tip. Absolutely I will include that for sure.

Will not forgetta the Setta either ;)

They have videos of all the past events and put them up on their site. I will post mine once it is up.

Took them about 3 months to upload the video, but they did a decent job. They put the slides on top of the vid, which works.

um um um um um

I was the first one up and my nerves show. I was stuck by the mic stand for the first minute and after I freed the cord I got a bit more confident.

At least I shared a bit of interest in pinball to a few of the 300 + folks there.

Link I mention at the end

It was a bit strange because I was invited to present with the topic already decided. A lot of folks had to apply and did not make it. I really wish I could of used bits of video or animated gifs.

I love the chalkboards and the little digs there...

Nice work! I hate public speaking. You did great!!

Just looks at my youtube videos if you want to hear someone say um, um , um, ALOT more than you did in front of a crowd, LOL

Great job!

Chris

Thanks all for the positive feedback. It was fun. I would of changed so many bits of it, but it is done.

I just really like pinball and after the show I had a bunch of folks ask questions. I was glad to do it.

Dont forget that New york banned pins for some time for being a game of skill and for that reason a gambling device
