I have played a few of the "newer" games in Mame recently and I get it now. With most of them it's not all skill. A lot of it is how many quarters you put in them. With the older, more challenging games you can't do that. It almost seems as if you are playing the same game with different themes. Kudos to the classics!

That really depends on the game. Some would argue that games like NARC and Gauntlet were quarter eaters too. However, there are some people that could play forever on one coin. The same can be said about today's newer games as well. It just takes a bit of skill.

Some of the newer games can be played on one credit but some sequentially count down your power meter over time so even if you don't take a "hit" you are still losing life. Spiderman and X-men are examples of games where your power meter continuously counts down. Raiden and Street Fighter on the other hand could, theoretically, be played to end on one quarter. However, I believe all Jamma era games have an "end"...

I was actually discussing this with some of my students today when they were comparing a few Neo-Geo games to Gauntlet Legends and Dark Legacy. I think the coin can go either way but I do tend to see (at least what I own) the older games being more skill based.

there was a lot more randomness as well, for the most part. i could play DK 10 times on the first level and every time get a different score or die before making it to the top. newer games, (not all), but i would say more 90's games, anyways, it always went the same for the most part. for example, sonic the hedgehog, there were always patterns to beat dr. robotnick. or mega man, there was always a particular way to beat the bosses to get to the end of the game.
