I can't believe this game came out in 1988!!

Three years earlier. The KLOV entry is mistaken (big surprise...)
The flyer and game title screen show 1989.

Hard Drivin' was released in '88.

I never saw a Winning Run in an arcade. I'm sure I would have played it... I'm a sucker for a racing game.

Looks like an updated Pole Position to me..even the track looks about the same.

Yeah I agree, it doesn't look too much more impressive than Hard Drivin'.

I loved Hard Drivin' but I can see the difference between the games, Winning Lap looks more like Virtua Racing.

But looking at flyers I found this, and all I can say is OMGWTFBBQ!!!!

I don't thing HD:Airborne ever got released. I know I have never seen one. Anyone? Does AtariScott have one in a warehouse?

The incredible thing about Winning Run wasn't really the graphics, but the experience of the total package.

The motion control was simply amazing. A fast response linked to a realistic steering mechanism really made it feel like you were really driving a car. Probably the most realistic motion arcade game I have played.

I only ever saw one, in the mid-to-late 90's, and thought it was ahead of its time then, even though other games had more realistic graphics. For a while it was all I played at that arcade. (Either Malibu Grand Prix (this one, not the one with the murders) or Castle Games (also shown in that last link) in Houston.)

Totally remember that game. My dad had one at one of his arcades (Space Station in owings mills, md) back in the day. Iirc, it was $1.50 per play. It was a sitdown driver that had the ability to spin around 270 degrees. I remember my dad telling me that the unit was 1 of 11 that made it into the USA.

I have no idea what happend to it.

Mike
