I have an I-Cade 60 in 1 with this board
http://www.jammaboards.com/store/60-in-1-multigame-pcb/prod_212.html

The machine is set up to look like a Donkey Kong so it only has a 4 way joystick and one button (jump). The CP is quite nice and I'm not looking to replace it but am I'm going to add a button or two to get some more out of it and was wondering about preferences.

I wont be going 8 way w/ the joystick (makes pac man etc no fun).
I'm not going to add a trackball for those few gamnes but was thinking of adding a second and possibly third button. Any thoughts on the third button? Have it need it?

The 3rd buttons best use is for gunsmoke. It has relevance for a couple other games.

some guys will use the start buttons for shooting as well, if they don't want to mess up the control panel.

You could consider one of the switchable 4way/8way joysticks.
I put 1 in a 60 in1 cab and loved and I bought a 2nd one in case I build another one.
pricey though, about $60 shipped with the red ball top joystick.

Some games are unplayable with the 4 way stick. fyi

Gunsmoke and Breakout are the only 2 games to use 3 buttons. Gumsmoke has an option to use just one button, and on Breakout, you only use the third button to start on the third level. So IMO having a third button is a waste unless those 2 games are really important to you. I would at least add a second button though. If nothing else, just get a joystick with a thumb button (not sure if you can get that in a 4-way though).
