I believe I fixed my Q*Bert losing high scores with power up issue

First off, I am all about high-score saving. It's makes the game that much better for me. I love beating my best or trying to beat a score a bud put on one of my machines. And, well, I have been really bummed that Q*Bert wasn't saving my scores!...

I installed that Q*Bert high-score mod with the NVRAM and new caps. However, I have constantly been losing my scores. Like, non-stop. The only way I could get my high-scores to not go away was to power down Q*Bert on its own before I turned my arcade off. Then, power him on by himself after I turned the arcade on. Otherwise, I would lose my high-scores if I turned the Q*Bert on at the same time and with the rest of the games. It's a major pain and I always forget to turn the game off when I power everything down. So, bam! I lose scores. I even tried to double cap the reset circuit and then the game was resetting all the time and in the middle of a game. So, that didn't work for me.

So... I heard some guys taking about this in the repair forum and one of them mentioned that maybe a voltage regulator would work. So, I went over to Amazon and found one for $48 shipped (Amazon Prime). So, I took a chance and ordered it. Why not? Maybe a little overkill but I have spent more on other junk for this hobby! :)

I installed it the other day and have yet to lose my scores (knocks on wood).

I wouldn't run out and get one yet. Give me a week to make sure. But, so far so good! I'll report back later. I turn my arcade on daily, so it'll get a good test.

I got this one:

Turned on the arcade tonight and my high scores are still there. W00t! I have never had my high scores last this long before.

I think this is cool. :)

I had this problem as well. I think turning it on/off on it's own after the rest of the games were on/off solved the problem... "MOST" of the time.

Yeah, I always forget, and don't want to think about turning Q*Bert on and off by itself. I like turning everything on with the 4 switches I have and all at once.

So, are you constantly turning Q*Bert on and off by itself?

I've had one on my Qbert for over a year. Can also vouch for it. Only need it if you're doing what John describes.

ordered one of these, and it came in tonight. didn't work for me. same problem - sometimes saves scores, sometimes not. sigh...

Well, that blows! Mine is still happily saving scores.

Again, mine was losing scores if I turned the Q*Bert on with my entire arcade game. I have almost 30 games down here. I was turning Q*Bert on with all of them and at the same time. I verified that it would save the scores if I turned Q*Bert on by itself and after I powered the whole arcade on. So, you should verify this is your problem before buying one of these. I am guessing this will only help people who have a bunch of games that are being turned on at the same time.

Saw and replied to your post in the repair section. If you can try a different high score save method (battery with low power SRAMS instead of NVRAMS) it could help narrow down your issue.
