Finally. After being stuck in the 190k's for a long while I got 279,990 just now.

Strange game for me. For years I averaged about 50k with a personal best of 91k. Then 2 years ago at CAX, BAM! 3 million!!! For one game only, then back down to 50-60k. Anyone else ever have that happen on a game? I've been in the zone before, but that was ridiculous.

Now, I'm battling Satan of the Hollow almost daily so my scores are getting more consistent. And slowly rising. :D

Nice job. The best I've scored is around 55,000. Does it get remarkably easier after a certain point or something? Because it is damned hard six or seven levels into the game.

yeah it is! i've only played mine a little since the power supply crapped out, but good lord, it gets tough in those levels where they all dive at you. the trick i've been doing which i saw in a youtube video is to leave the bridge complete so you can cross at a time where it gets too tough.

Yeah...leaving a panic route is good. One thing it took me a while to really internalize is that the bonuses are cumulative. So each flag you got for clearing a wave gives you 1000 points *every* time you shoot Satan. Not just the first time. I'm still trying to decide whether it's better to cross the bridge as soon as I can to get the bonus points sooner (thus more often) or wait to get a bigger bonus. Waiting seems right but the lake of fire gets wider each time you come back. I mean it gets *really* wide. And those damned bridge bombers. Oooohhhhhh, how they are damned!!

This is a really well designed game. Lots of choices for the player. Lots of strategy involved. But twitching is also needed and laying down a proper wall of laser fire.

[EDIT]
And no, it doesn't get easier. It just gets harder and harder. So far anyway. I don't know how far I got, but I finally got the big 50 flag this time plus a few singles I think. So somewhere between level 50 an 60. And it was dark. Dive bombers. In the dark. With saturation egg bombing. And they would dive behind the fires and come up under me. In the dark. God, that sucked!!

now, is there a point where the lake of fire doesn't get any wider?
Yeah, I think so. But honestly I'm too busy running for my life to count bridge pieces! :) And of course, there's only so much screen area, so yeah there's an ultimate limit. Hmm....I think it may stop at the edge of the rock just left of center.

i know what you mean. i hate those little devil guys with the egg bombs that burn. those things really piss me off.

edit: i do have to say, once i master this, i think i will automatically be able to master galaga as well.

Ooh yeah...that's a thought. Galaga might be easier after twitching through The Hollow.

The eggs are the worst. Especially when 4 of them come down side by side. There's no way to pass through that so you just hope you can survive in the remaining 3 inches of space until they burn out. Usually...not gonna happen. Ok, off to CAX. WOOHOO!!!
