I almost feel guilty getting a grail for $200 - Get ready to Joust!!

Well, I posted my best deal at Allentown, but the excitement is still going on. :D
So I figured I share some pics, it's not mint, but close enough for me to be plenty happy.

Basically bought it as untested off the convention floor at Allentown for $200.
Shrink wrapped for the trip.

Who says minivans aren't cool? They can haul plenty. My luggage, Joust, and a Popeye cocktail table all fit nicely.

Biggest cabinet issue was the feet had collapsed and tore loose.
So I replaced the blocks with some thicker ones, added leg leveler plates and new leg levelers.
This cabinet has a MDF front, which had some swelling at the base. Sanded and primed it.

Got the front painted, it turned out pretty good. I always forget to take the "before" pics!

Next issue was the battery holder, the remote pack that was installed had corroded and fallen into the bottom
thankfully sparing the board any severe damage. I removed the remnants of the original battery holder and installed
a CR2032 lithium holder.

Onto the cleaning, installed a new power cord and cleaned up the cabinet inside.

To be continued......

As it was bought, it had an undersized switcher installed,
but given that I had an original linear supply that was rebuilt, I opted to reinstall the original.
I removed some nasty wire splices and returned the wire harness to it's original connectors... cleaned up very nice.

This was a bit of a decision for me, I love switchers,
but having an already rebuilt original supply on hand pushed me in that direction.
With RAM issues caused by the switcher on occasion (corrupt HS tables and settings),
seemed to be the best course anyway for most Williams games.

New connector can be seen on the top left of the power supply PCB.

With the inside complete, it was on to the coin door to remove the credit switch and install token mechs.
For those that notice the OTHER Joust cab, that story is here

All in all, no board issues was a huge blessing.
Everything fired up (even with the switcher) just fine.
Biggest operation issue was the absence of the battery which caused a memory fault, had to open the coin door (memory interlock switch) to reset.
Had to do a few adjustments on the monitor, but it looks great now.

I'm always amazed at the array of boards in these machines... especially when you compare this to a JROK!!
The 2nd picture is the inside of my Multi-Williams JROK cab, and yes, that is where the rebuilt supply came from! :D
My brother has always wanted the JROK, so next week it goes to him (with a switcher!)... Joust is my grail... so I'm good.

What's left.....
The joysticks are a little wore, sloppy feel to them,
CPO has a little too much wear for my taste (burns along the front curve mainly).
I am fine with the cabinet, not perfect, but plenty nice to look at.

Nice find man, what a great deal for only $200.00!

Nice pickup. Double bonus that there was so little to do to get it up and running.

Arcade Shop has Williams two way bases if you want to rebuild the joysticks back to new feeling.

Awesome awesome AWESOME!!!

and the repair log w/ pics is great too, especially since i just got my robotron running that had a konami classic harness grafted in. put in a dokert harness and a MPU from another member and bam ROBOTRON LIVES!

Joust is one of my grails as well, glad its in a good place now, looks like it was in really great condition for that price.

Awesome grab!
I just picked up $40 Sinistar. EVERY board...and I mean EVERY board has\had an issue.

Got everything going except the I/O board that I think will be fixed on Thursday when my care package arrives.

So much fun bringing them back!

Good stuff. And nice resto. That is one of the best things about Williams cabs, a little bondo, some paint, and it's just like original and new. :D

Congrats on your new addition!

Joust is usually a very good candidate for a tv donor tube swap. As the "Joust" title screen was burned heavily in all the Jousts I've owned. Makes a hell of a difference in my arcade.. Give it a try!

Actually the screen burn isn't really an issue. You can see the "Joust" title burn faintly, not to a level that it draws your attention even with the monitor off.

So I have been having trouble with the -5v dropping out, figured out it was a bad connector at the power supply. So last night I reflowed the solder on that pin. Fired the game up and all is good, I thought.

I am installing LED's in my Cyclone pin, turn around and the Joust is dead. Check and the 5v LED is off on the power board. Dug into it today and fuse F5 was blown. Put a new 7A SB fuse in and checked the power with the PCB unplugged. Dead on at 4.99v. Plugged PCB back in and fired it back up. All is good again.

Question..... Why would that fuse blow? The fuse was kinda nasty old looking, but do I need to worry about checking something else?

If you haven't seen Tighe's ball and button restore thread, it's worth the read!!!

I did the blue joystick last night and the result was very nice! I thought I was going to have to buy new joysticks!
