I agree as a seller- Ebay SUCKS

I buy with Paypal and on Ebay. I never sell on Ebay any longer but when I did I had an account set up that was linked to a savings account that I used. As soon as I got the money transferred in to my bank account I would transfer it into another account. If I'm not mistaken and I could very well be, if you have an account linked to paypal they can still pull money back from that account. Hence the dual account setup that I used....

Epay is pretty lousy these days. Waaaay back when, it was pretty easy to get scammed by sellers, but they have so shifted the balance of power now that it is ridiculous.

Since there is practically no recourse for a bad buyer anymore, I just don't feel comfortable selling stuff there. All the buyer has to say is 'this board didn't work', and I'm out a lot of time and money.

I've also heard stories of people getting a board, claiming it doesn't work and sending back their old non working board trying to pass it off as the one they just bought.

Well, here's my 2 cents re: ebay & Paypal. Now normally, I'll be the first in line to malign ebay and/or PP. Here is one time where I actually came out untouched.
About 2 months ago, I purchased a laptop on ebay for about 1-200 buck over the price you'd normally pay since it was described as basically "unused & blemish-free" in addition to working flawlessly and error-free. Remember those terms...
Anyway, got the laptop a week or so later (also paid a HUGE premium for shipping, BTW.
The P/O erased the HD and included all recovery discs for me to load the OS.
Inserted the disc in the tray, laptop comes right up-no issues. Starts loading the OS. After about a minute it simply shuts down-no power at all. Check a few things, connections, battery etc., no problems. Attempt to load once more, fan goes into super-high gear and shuts down. One more time, re-load and shuts down within a minute.
These models, sometimes, have this issue-its a known problem. But it is the luck of the draw if you'll get one or not. I hva e2 others with no problems, and one that does. I believe it depends on the processor chip, but I'm not sure..that's just what I've read.
I contact the owner-no response. Screw it-I contacted Paypal and started a dispute. I figured if the owner knew a 'trick' to get this to work properly that this would certainly make him contact me. I normally would never go this route.
He contacts me right away and tells me to take the entire laptop apart and fiddle with something under the keyboard. NO WAY am I doing this...It was described as 100% flawless and that's that.
Long story even longer- I ship it back to him per Paypal's orders, he receives it and sends me this bitchy, nasty email stating that ..."I switched it out for an old piece of shit computer, gutted the entire innards (!) and swapped out the screen for a cracked one"
WOW! If I had 1/2 as much time/knowledge to do that, I would've fixed the damn thing. What an a$$hole. I really resented the fact that he more or less called me a thief.
Sooo, Paypal actually came out the hero in this case...but..YMMV.

Gozer's random thought of the day:

So many sellers on eBay or being burned and scammed out of moneys lately. Alot of it seems done maliciously too. In this suffering economy, where people don't have as much disposable incomes, they are down on their luck, looking for a last source of income, emotionally unstable, and have nothing more to lose....
How long before some whackjob takes the plunge and decides he's had enough of being shorted out of money and resorts to driving/flying to the buyers house and capping him in the head over a mere $50 transaction? Because after all, it isn't about the money, it's about the principle.
It'll happen. Then of course eBay will changes policies and initiate third party pickup points for seller safety (which will no doubt be another fee for buyer and seller).

Just a thought.

Enjoy your breakfast.

Couldn't agree more - when I got burned on the iPhone I said to myself "If this guy didn't live across the entire USA I would go pay him a visit with my shit-kicking-boots." There is nothing that burns me more than dishonest people. :(

Jordon - glad it worked out, and i agree that Ebay / PP / whoever is regulating (thats confusing - the ruling can go through PP or Ebay) did the right thing. Stories like that are positive. Fortunately, i've done hundreds of transactions (thousands??) as a buyer and haven't hit that spot yet, i am sure the Law of averages will catch up with me though.

But, when you have an item sold as pictured with no moving parts, and it quickly gets reversed, it tells me no one at ebay / PP took the time to actually review the facts. Thats the insult in their process, very poor practice.

Gozer - yes, very soon, i can see how CL / Ebay "ripped off! killings! Sensationalism!' will be all over the media. Sad but true, a long time coming.

I can also predict that buyers will realize the sellers Lament, and there will be a huge uptick in scams related to this (bogus switchouts, claims of mail getting lost, these people can be creative). If that happens in mass, Ebay will be forced to change their stance away from "The seller is always wrong" and maybe actually fairly arbitrate. Novel concept.

Not really, you need to cover yourself if you sell. First off tracking is always a must and second INSURE everything.. If they say the board is not working. You tell then "thats what insurance is for" if you insure it, paypal will agree on your side.. I had a guy say a board didnt work on ebay when i know for a fact that it worked 100%. The fuy put a claim in, i provided insurance info and that was it!!

Im afraid to sell on ebay but I do buy alot of stuff. That being said, I have followed through with 2 claims in which the buyers ripped me off. The first thing was a x-box 360. i paid alot for this one because it was put in a modified clear blue box with Led's which was pretty cool looking. He sold it as an elite system but had to cables to controllers. Since I had these already from my other x-box that got the red ring of death I bought it. When I got it, it was a used basic x-box that he was selling as new and he didnt send the hard-drive. I tried to contact him and he said that he said that no cables or accessories were included. I told him the hard-drive was not an accessory as you couldnt run it without it and its what makes the elite system different than the basic edition. Ebay agreed with me and gave me my money back. Never heard back from the guy. The other thing I bought was a CPO. Never got it. Told the guy and he said he would check with his wife. He sent me a message back saying that she mailed it out. I said I never got it and would file a claim. He never responded, I never got it so I filed a claim. I then got this really awful email saying he hopes I like my free item and Im an as*hole. About two months later, I got a package in the mail. It was from that guy. It was postmarked just a couple days before I got it. I was going to contact him to let him know but when I opened it, it was just part of the COP(the sides not the actual top) so I put return to sender and threw it back in the mail. So, his wife never did mail it out and when they found it and mailed it, it wasnt even the described item. But Im the A*shole?

Did you ever think that it might have gotten lost and was then found and post marked and sent to you? Why would they send it 2 months later after all was said and done? I'm just sayin...

Every (and I mean EVERY) horror story in this thread involves Paypal. Has nobody ever used ProPay? Moneybookers? Paymate? Or processed CCs through their own merchant account? I have to wonder if the problem is actually PayPal, and not eBay itself...

Personally, when I start selling my scopes, I won't accept PayPal. I'm still researching the other three, leaning towards Moneybookers atm.

Paypal = Ebay

Ebay = Paypal

You can not list on Ebay without allowing Paypal as an option (as bullshit as that seems). So good luck trying to sell on ebay without accepting Paypal.

Good luck with that. It's been a while since I sold on ebay ... so maybe things have changed... but I distinctly remember having a real hard time trying NOT to accept paypal.

Yeah try finding someone that uses another service besides PP. After many sales, PP is 95 percent of the time used. Occasionally i get a bank check, which really throws off the whole shipping ryhtym (wait for the check to clear while all other items shipped out).

I think PP is a great service - it changed everything. The arbitration and bank likeness are the ills.

I dont even care if the guy sends it back or not. Supposedly he is (Ebay asked him to). I am sure even if he doesnt send it, they will still refund him.

I think she prob had it in her car to drop off but was prob busy and it fell where she couldnt see it. Months later while cleaning out her car, she found it and didnt want to tell her husband about it because he was pissed and thought I ripped him off. So, she thought she could just get it mailed and forget about it. Could be any number of scenarios. Im just saying that he didnt have to be a dick about it. I paid him for a product that was not delivered.

Lesson to be learned. Dont depend on other people (especially your wife) to mail out important packages. Do it yourself.
