I accidentally erased my 3 high scores on Asteroids Deluxe, halp!

This sounds like a long shot but does anyone have the capability to re-program the scores back on the chip? I've had those damn scores on there since the early 90's, would like to have them back on there...

Isn't that technically cheating ?

Get that shit out of my damn thread, ya bastards. :D

Besides, it's apparently trendy and chic to cheat. :p

Can you burn EPROMs? Probably really easy to hack the ROM to hard-code your score, then when you die, it'd let you set your initials for that score.

Pulling the EAROM and directly rewriting the chip would probably be difficult, just because most burners don't support the chip or its weird voltages.

Yeah that's the info I got from andrewb. I was hoping someone would have a setup ready to go to do this, like HudsonArcade and it would be a quick and easy thing to have done. :D

how high are you talking?

if rom hacking isn't your thing, you could try setting the dips to easiest/most lives to start and try to recreate the scores manually, then go back to factory settings

I need 100,000 miles rolled back on my car too ;)

Although the earom is hard to program off the board, it would be 'easy' to write a program to run on the Asteroids board that tells the hardware to program it with whatever you want.

Yeah, the hacking the EPROMs idea is a good one. You need to figure out where in the ROMs the default high score initials and scores are stored, then change them. Then manually 'erase' the high scores in the test screen, and it would program the EAROM with the new defaults.

You probably would also need to update the checksums as well, so the self-test wouldn't think the changed code was a bad ROM, so you'd have to figure that out too. (Either change some dummy EPROM data to make the checksum correct, or change the checksum value wherever it's stored, or just disable the self-test somehow, as I believe it runs automatically when the board powers up.)

So it potentially could be done, but would still take somebody's time.

Pffft, dude seriously, I already have max lives set and easy mode on, and I have the easy roms!:deal::beerchug::girl:

I don't think Asteroids Deluxe has default high scores. I had one with a blown EAROM and it never had a high score table displayed when it first booted.

Ah yes, you are correct. I forgot AD is different than the later vectors (e.g., Tempest).

That said, AD does have an erasing function, and it must write *something* to the EAROM (which it then interprets as 'blank' after reading it.) Unless that isn't how it works. But I'd guess you could maybe still hack that erasing subroutine to write some desired values to the EAROM.

Anyway, without existing knowledge of how the code works, it's not likely a quick thing to figure out. But it would be a fun exercise, if someone had the time.

I figured just replace the code that adds to the score when you shoot something with code that hardcodes the score to a fixed value... so you just burn the ROM, start a game, shoot something... then die. The fixed score will be a high score, you enter your initials, and the game takes care of the rest. Should be super easy to do.

BTW, what are the scores? If they're not very high, you could probably just ask someone who's good at the game to come over and set the scores. Or, practice a little bit and set new ones. ;)

So, since the early 90's you've not played and gotten better and beat those scores? Why not play, and make better scores ... and learn not to inadvertently erase those new ones? LOL

Umm here's a crazy thought. Why don't you just play the game again and get new high scores ? Or are you not as good as you were in the 90's ? If so then what better reason than to revisit an old classic and give it some love ? I think the game purposely erased your high scores because it feels neglected. :)

HaHa .......I just noticed the post above this one. too funny.

As a fellow AD player/fan (who has also seen the scores), I can vouch that they were decent ones, and not trivial to replicate casually. AD is a hard game.

I did give him the same advice of just beating them, but if he's had them for 20+ years, I can see why he'd be attached to them. :)

I feel ya. I need to reprogram 9999999 into my Joust after losing it during a botched move. I am hoping to get Lon to come back over and do it again soon. ;)

I would like to find me a set of Asteroids Deluxe easy proms. I know they exist. I actually seen a kit for sale not too long ago on Ebay. I should have jumped on it then.
