Ok well I have a backup board for my hypersports, that has always kind of worked, but had weird sounds, messed up high scores and such. But it played fine.

so tonite I get a hair up my a$$ to pull all the socketed chips clean the legs, blow air in the mounts on the boards and see if that helps.

well on one of the chips I found 2 bent legs, bent flat to the rom, so there was no way that they had been inserted properly. sweet I think, there is my problem.
well I continued cleaning the rest of them, and put the one with bent legs back in properly.

Now it's worse! characters standing in the wrong place. Cannot even enter my initials properly. what gives?

don't know but you might want to remove that chip and bend the pins again so they don't insert in the socket. This may put things back as they were.

yeah I guess it would

in the event that I put them in backwards, I wouldn't even be getting the game up right?

I am quite certain I did not do this but thought I would ask.

Well, when you figure out the problem, please let me know. I have a Hyper Sports board that is a little buggy too. High scores show all 5's and 0's like 55000, 55505, etc.

I also have a few lines through the character that I can't seem to get rid of. Way better than it was but still not quite right. I've reseated all of the chips and it helped, but still not fixed all the way.

Try replacing the brittle ribbon cables between the boards.

Cleaning pins on the chips is the right thing to do, but did you clean the inside surface of the pins too?

Double check sockets for corrosion and replace any bad ones.

Those are very common issues on older boards.

If you have an EPROM programmer then you can compare checksums of each ROM with what's in ROMIDENT or in the MAME database.
