I know most people on here shun the mame world. Has anyone used or set-up hyperspin? I'm trying to and getting lost faster than I start.

i downlaoded a torrent pre configured complete hyperspin set with all art and vids and im still lost + i cant stand the damn wheel game list

use gameex it's sooooooo easy to use and has great support on their forums (more help there than on byoac)+ it has a built in juke box feature

I set it up with MAME only and about 75 games, it's beautiful and looks totally clean and professional. Far better than any other frontend and I've tried a lot of them over the past 7 years. It basically looks like the newest ultracade Global VR Classics games, except it has no credit management and it doesn't display the controls used before a game is loaded.

I have a P4 2.66 ghz 512M RAM and run it at 640x480 and turned off advanced transitions to help with the performance. This is close to the minimum system it will run on. I tried to run it on an Athlon 1700+ but it crashed routinely due to not enough CPU horsepower. (I confirmed this with slower Intels as well).

I could probably upload a video of it in action. Once you see it running polished on a MAME cabinet, it'd be hard to resist using it. Of course, it takes a little time to set it up just like any frontend, but I thought it was easier to set up than every other front end I've tried.

One of the nice things about it is it's completely portable. So I can just copy it and my MAME folder onto a jumpdrive and run it anywhere with no extra setup. My complete setup fits on a 1 gb jump drive.

If you want a MAME setup with 5000 games, this isn't the frontend for you. I like a compact list of good games that I personally enjoy or remember playing as a kid. I removed a lot of games that had Themes already just because I didn't think the games were worth keeping. Quality over quantity in this case.

Pretty front end, but definitely only for a small list of games. As of last time I checked, didn't even have a search function. Lame....

Warlord_Ag or how ever you spell it has a full mamecab setup with hyperspin and its really amazing. Not to bad but read their forums for major help.

Do you know if they have any animated themes? Last time I looked they only had like 10 themes, and they all were about the same; just different colors and slightly different look.

yup some of the forum members have been working on some pretty sweet themes and tom has a pretty sweet custom theme maker so ifo you are good with photoshop you can really pimp out the front end
i really like the new vallhalla theme

and again there is no other frontend that is as plug and play as game ex i have tried them all

hyperspin is flashy but i preffer function over flash who wants to scroll thrue even 75 games on a freakin pie wheel it takes forever
csnt beat the automactic menu creation that gameex has instead of having to manually compile your lists like mala and hyperspin

I use AtomicFE - very powerful, but you've got to know what you're doing. That's not an issue with me since I work in IT, but I'm slowly starting to think I might want to switch to Gameex, even though it costs $25. However, it does have a lot of features - my main dealbreaker is a cool animated theme like I have currently with my Atomic setup.

That's not necessary with Hyperspin unless you want a trimmed list. I just set it to show games with Themes Only and then removed the handful I decided I didn't want. Just delete or move the xml file for that game. Took 2 minutes.

What do you want out of your MAME cabinet? Something that looks and works like a polished arcade game, or something that requires you to change settings and make adjustments and explain how to use it every time someone tries to use it?

Again... Hyperspin is the nicest, if you want a smaller MAME game list. I do, so in my eyes, Hyperspin blows everything else out of the water. Spinning through the wheel isn't a big deal with 100 games, you can push the joystick to the Right and it will skip quickly to the next letter. Navigating the frontend is nearly as fun as playing the games.

If you want 5000 games and need to be able to search by year, sort lists, switch emulators, etc. You might as well just sit at your Desktop PC with a keyboard and mouse, because you're never going to have a fully configured system anyway. EVERY MAME setup needs some games tweaked for keymappings, trackball speed, volume, etc. It simply isn't possible to do that for thousands of games. No frontend can fix that.

Hyperspin is so nice I like to just leave it up and running through the demos. Best demos and animations, bar none.

Hyperspin looks awesome but man is it a bitch to get set up nicely.

I keep wondering about this statement, I found HS trivial to set up compared to other frontends. Maybe it has come along since you last tried it? Maybe I should zip up my setup so others here can evaluate it. Just unzip it and run it...

+1

I'd love to try it if you were willing to do that...I'm currently setting up Mala.

I guess I should clarify. Hyperspin is a bitch to set up "correctly" for a large game list... 50-100 games, not so much an issue (as long as they have a theme for each game)... a full set? No so much.

And yes, it's been a while since I last tried to set it up so things may have gotten easier.

YEa, I'm looking at a cabinet that will probably have 50-60 games max. I plan on keeping it to games that use two buttons or less. I want something that when I turn on the game, anyone even my 3 year old son can use.

That is what I have liked about Hyperspin so far. I finally figured out what I was doing wrong on the wheel and it is slowly coming together now for me.

Now I just need to figure out why my Mame emulator won't work right.

Grrr....

Of course I am doing all of this on my PC since my mame cab is far from ready.

it really all comes down to prefrence
but i dont understand how its any harder to controll gamex over hyperspin or others
my 4 year old cousin comes over and hops right on my rig with no problems
its as simple as fliping te on swithc then selecting mame or jukebox
once in mame it shows a list or differnt games (all /original /neo geo ect )pick what you want to play and bam thats it player one start selects items player 2 start goes back a page

your statmend about wanting a polished arcade system is a little false allong with having to setup diffrent games to work right
hyperspin is way to fancy looking for an arcade cab rember these games were basic and a bright high res hyperspin with its crazy intro reminds me more of a pc game than gamex's basic intro logo bit nice clean basic menu
i guess if using a command line mame you may have to dick with setting up each game but so far i just open mameui32 and set joystick games to use keyboard(im using a keywiz encoder) and setup trackball/spinner/light gun games to use the mouse (using an optowiz encoder for my trackball) its really a no brainer setup even with my full set

i had hyper spin setup for awile and people complained that the wheel was a little overwelming and that it took to long to load the artwork (and that was on a 2.8 ghz dual core with 2 gigs of ram )with game ex the list and artwork is instant even on a 2.0 p4 with 512 of ram

also editing xml files may work for us that have a understanding of programing and pc use but the average person just wants to install and go even me with my ms certs still find it to much hassle to edit ini files and xml docs what did that old infomercial say "set it and forget it"

i stated in another thread that gameex vs hyperspin/mala is like xp vs vista
game ex is like xp its basic easy to setup and use and just plain works every time
hyperspin/mala is like vista its flashy and has all the bells and whistles but is a bitch to deal with and setup and can really be a hedache when somthing goes wrong (ever had hyper spin error put on ya it can suck when you have windows shelled with game ex it will automaticly run explorer.exe on crash or exit with hyper spin you would have to plug in a keyboard then cntrl alt del and manually run explorer.exe to try and repair the problems or work up some script to do that )

here are some ss i took from my hyperspin setup and my game ex setup
here is game ex actually with the new user created themes its getting pretty flashy itself
gameex1.png

gameex2.png

and the super flashy hyperspin
hyperspin.png

ps keep in mind hyper spin is also more system hungry so if using an older pc you may need an upgraded graffix card
game ex runs great on a 2.0 p4 with 512 ram and onboard graffix

if you want a frontend thaat you can configure to your exact ideas and want all the flash mala is far better than hyperspin for its options for setting up custom lists and its support for vertical themes

I never cared for gameex. If I didn't use Mamewah, I'd probaby use MALA.

I'd like to take a look at Hyperspin again, but getting the themes is a PIA. I really just want to evaluate with more then one or two themes, but don't feel like paying for ftp access just to evaluate it. If I knew I was going to use it I would, but just to evaluate it seems like a bit of waste. It does look pretty slick though and much more professional.
