Hyperball

Awesome. I have been hearing positive things aobut the machine, I cannot wait to restore this one.

On another note, does anyone know if Leon's test eprom will work for this? I know that it has a sys7 motherboard, but the driver board is different. Thanks for the input

I have one as well, just brought it back out of storage actually.... it was a mess.
It's coming back to life now though.
Last thing to figure out is why the shooter wants to lock "ON" at random times, which will blow the shooter fuse.

My understanding is yes.... since it is used with the driver board disconnected anyways.
At least that's the way I understand it so far. Been meaning to burn one before I dug into the instructions too deep.

Anyone have the sound board test ROM from Leon ?
The only link I found so far was bad.

thanks for the reply. I have not seen my hyperball, I will physically pick it up tomorrow. I will post some pictures when I do.

Here are some pictures before cleaning. Everything looks like it's in good condition. The boards look real clean as well.

Double and triple check the plugs before you connect them. Some machines (like mine) had a couple of the colored connectors swapped. Match up the wiring.

Few more pics. That's the playfield after a quick cleaning, looks great!

I got the machine to fire up into audit mode. I was able to start a game, but no GI or shooter working. Sounds appear to work fine.

So I finally got a chance to look at hyperball.

I replaced the battery holder, batteries and the 5101. Now the game will boot up normally, but all is not good...

Player 1, 2 and credit/match displays work great but no GI on the backglass or playfield when you initially turn on. Pressing the start button starts a game but there is no playfield lights, no GI, no alphanumeric display, no ball feed and the ball shooter does not work. The sounds do work properly.

I have proper voltage input to the power switching board but not proper output. No blown fuses points to the control board as the culprit. Any ideas?

Check the 20A GI fuse. I had one that looked good, and would measure good when out of circuit, but when voltage was applied it would heat up and open.

Also double check the connectors to make sure you got all of them hooked up.

In regards to GI -
So you have the power and all hooked up now ?
(see pic)
Check those connectors carefully, they are notorious for burning up.

The shooter fuse is on the smaller power board below the large one, check that.

A bad rom could easily cause lots of flakyness as well.
What version of software is in yours ?

I finally got time to spend on Hyperball. Turns out that the trace that carries the blanking signal was open. I had the correct blanking signal on the motherboard but it was not getting to the driver board. Some solder and a jumper wire fixed that problem. I then replaced the 40 pin female connector on the driver board.

I now have a working hyperball :D

Not 100% though. I seem to have no GI on both the backglass and the playfield. Fuses check ok, I will have to investigate this some more.

Interesting story though, I was rocking the game around a little bit while playing and tilted it. Came back on and I rocked it a bit more and it went completely dead. Turns out a ball landed right across two leads of the transformer. Blew the 8 Amp main fuse. Made the ball look like it has eyes now! I will post some pics later.

Not really good at it yet, but how it is set is crazy. Goes through a quarter in about 30 seconds at average! I will have to mess with the settings.

I don't have all 55 balls, anyone have a link of where to buy?

Sounds like typical williams interconnect issue.

Get the latest rom revision, cant remember what it is been awhile. Stock settings on hyperball sucks, it will piss you off even though its still fun.
Get your roms updated
then get your settings to this-
http://www.pinball.com.au/eshop/?MIval=art_info&grp=10&artno=HYPERB
Print that out and keep a copy in the cab.
I got my new balls off ebay was around 40 bucks I think. Also check your shooter for flowering at the edge and if it does take it out and use a grinding wheel to re-bevel it so it doesnt tear the shit out of your new balls. You can also pad parts to make it MUCH quieter.

These hyperballs are known for being one of the hardest pins to restore and keep running. Ive had to repair mine several times and it just messed up on me again after pretty much going through the whole cabinet. Nothing big just a segment out on the playfield display other than that its 100%. Also do your interconnects youll thank me later and it will save you issues in the long run when youre chasing your tail. Also the main PS connector burns up or sometimes they are spliced into the board and causes GI issue as well as the interconnect.

Hyperball – Balls
McMaster-Carr # 96455K58
$14.45 per pack of 100

Version 6 is the latest ROM revision with high score keeping.
IC20 is really the only one you need, but here is the complete set.

Thanks for the McMasterr Carr link, I was probably going to use them. Are they 5/8" balls or 3/4" balls?

I will burn the new version EPROMS, thanks

I also found out that I am missing the protective shield that goes over the transformer. Makes sense now!

Good catch, I cut and pasted the wrong one... they are the 3/4", updated my earlier post.

Thanks. What's funny is that a few days ago when I asked the machine guy at work if he knew where I could get those, he instantly said McMasterr Carr and also said 5/8" just looking at it. When measured it was 3/4", I was surprised as usually he is dead on with estimating measurements.

On a side note, I just might order the 5/8 balls to see what they do..

I have not yet seen this game running at night. It must put on an awesome light show. I am an LED guy, this game might have some serious possibilities...

Thanks for the info. What do you mean by the interconnects and the PS connector? The only connector that I replaced was on the driver board, the 40 pin female connector.
