Hydro Thunder ... any way to duplicate this at home with a PC or 360?

Just curious about this.

I know that Hydro Thunder Hurricane exists from XBL and I would assume some PC version out there as well.

Is there anyway to duplicate the "controls" i.e. steering wheel and throttle control to make your own at home?

Anyone done this or even tried to?

Greg

I picked up one of the Midway packs for PS2 for the specific chance to play Hydro Thunder. I even picked up a Steering/Pedal setup to play it. Then I found out that - in their infinite wisdom - they didn't add support to the game so it could be played with a steering setup. All those racing games on there, and you can't use a steering wheel. Brilliant...

Yeah, but I bet you can remap something. I have that collection too (on GameCube and PS2) - does anyone remember if it uses analog for steering at all?

If so it seems possible to rig something up (serious kludge work would be required).

Too bad there's no good PC based version of those games.

There's a version on (original) Xbox and/or Dreamcast. I have it. If it is Xbox, Xboxes are cheap now and you can get a wheel. Could probably hack in a "real" throttle - maybe.

I play it on the original xbox with a Fanatec Forza 3 force feedback steering wheel and it's pretty good. That particular wheel is programmable so changing the configuration around is easy.

The Dreamcast port was the first one released, and was actually pretty accurate. The Xbox port, which shares a vaguely similar hardware profile to the original arcade hardware, was part of a reto compilation. Unfortunately, NEITHER system supports force feedback steering, which is why there was NEVER a "force feedback" steering wheel of any kind sold for the original Xbox. It simply was not designed for it, and Microsoft took the position that the hardware simply "can't do it", although I am sure that someone COULD have come up with a clever way to implement it through a custom software/hardware solution.

So, while both of those ports were good, neither supported force feedback. I am unaware of any PC ports, but that would be the most likely way you could do what you are talking about, if one exists.

Related to this, there WAS a VERY NICE port of San Francisco Rush: The Rock made for the PC, and it was available exclusively with a particular voodoo 3DFX board that I still have. I TRIED to find someone who could "hack" it to unlock it so that it could be played with other graphics cards, but nobody seemed interested. The really cool thing about it was the fact that it operated a up to VERY high resolutions and looked MUCH nicer than the arcade counterpart. Unless you run it on a early windows OS along with the specific 3DFX card, it really won't do you any good...

As others have said, you should be able to run some ports from Dreamcast, Xbox, etc... but you won't get force feedback, and multi-player will be split screen. IIRC those versions, even the arcade compilations, were all ports, not direct emulation, so there were actually some differences from the arcade versions.

Is that version actually locked to the video card, or simply 3DFX? If it's just 3DFX, you should be able to run a Glide wrapper. Speaking of old arcade-like PC drivers... I used to really like Ultim@te Race... I wonder how that would hold up these days.

I just did a search on the PC version of Rush the Rock... it looks like there's a crack out there to let you play on other video cards, plus using a wrapper of course. I have a 3D monitor (and 3D projector)... I wonder how well this works with that (3D w/ 3DFX wrappers has been hit and miss).

Here's a youtube link w/ info in the description: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JRPK827Q4Y . BTW, was there network support in this version?

I know this original thread is old....really old. BUT This is sort of relevant now.

I am/was looking for an HT stand up or h2overdrive, hard part is fitting these cabs in my basement.

HT has a PC port, and now HTH (hydro thunder hurricane) is out on pc (windows 10). So if I build a cabinet and have a nice wheel setup w/ a pc. I should be able to play both games. Just curious about the hand accelerator....it is fun to use, but has anyone made their own HT cab? Otherwise I was pondering taking the accel pedal and making it into a handle, then adding a button for boost. The boost jump would need to be altered in there somehow too.

I think making a PC to play HT would be a great fit for SFR! I remember that game as well.

Looks like I have some work ahead for getting a good wheel... I'll probably try to make a upright to save space....

did ANY console version of hydro have steering wheel support? the thunder collection on PS2 did not.
