Hurricane Aftermath

Well my brother really came through for me. He came over with his wife, her sister and kids, and 3 teenage boys to help me out. While I was getting blown out just cleaning and keeping up with the bunch, they powered through and demo'd the drywall 4 feet up pretty much everywhere that was wet except the garage and laundry/storage. Truly life savers.

The damage seems to be fairly minimal, still going through cleaning up and spraying bleach/water solution on the exposed studs, but I think I might be able to put up some new drywall and insulation (insulation actually mostly looks fine, but no sense in taking chances) in some affected areas as soon as tomorrow.

Strangely, the worst area found had nothing to do with storm damage, it was from a poorly implemented stand up shower in an unused bathroom. I wonder if I can claim that on homeowners to get it fixed. Hmm.

Gotta wonder if collectors who live near the ocean are starting to rethink hobby. There is only so much fun in continually re-building a waterlogged collection.

I've got cinderblocks ready to lift all the games about 6", but if Irma brings anything worse here... unfortunately, I don't have time to do any relocating and if I did there would be no guarantee that the alternate location would be any better.

Don't rush it. You don't want mold under all of your new material.

It matters how wet the wood is on the inside, not the outside.

I think they make a tool that tests this.

(But buy the materials now if you can to avoid the rush and months out of stock.)

Oh I'm being cautious. A lot of it was dry by the time cavities were opened, but I hit everything with bleach, let dry again, and plan to follow up with a antimicrobial for treating building materials.

I also want everything to be right, so I'm doing a lot more demo on affected areas, pretty much going floor to ceiling in all affected areas. May hold off installing drywall until the panel lift I ordered gets here anyways.

I wanted to remodel anyways, just not all at once lol. I just hope I'm not neglecting the games too much in the meantime.

Hey Guys, if it's any consolation, most all mortgage companies and banks are offering payment forgiveness for up to 3 months, possibly more on your home loan notes. Does not affect your credit. Same with student loans and other credit lines/loans.

FEMA did not come through at all. it will take years to fix the games. ill prob have to leave the garage and shed as is.

Gotya, sorry to hear that.

Things will work out, so don't get discouraged. Those Midway minis will survive (been there, done that).

Dat big FEMA money...

$249.99. Total.

And it's only a partial for the $600 worth of dehumidifiers I bought. Nothing else, no sanitation costs, no floor coverings (which the FEMA inspector seemed to think I would be good for on 3 rooms at least).

The charity organizations and the city made out like bandits though. Good for them I guess, toss another billion on the pile. Yeesh.

Stupid question but what does FEMA promise to do?

Provide temporary housing? Short term food? I'm just ignorant of what role FEMA is supposed to have in situations like this.
