HUO: Rock-Ola Nibbler

Awe don't worry about the chatter Flynn... I, for one, would like people to point out possible "issues" with a cab sold to me as HUO... that said, I've never come across a true HUO machine aside from my Golden Tee cab which is a Home Model without a coin door.

:D

BTW: Does your ROM version have the background music or no background music? I much prefer the version with the music. I play Nibbler all the time on my cocktail MAME.

I've seen several Nibbler games and boards, and none have had the background music. I'm not sure if the boards are all missing the music ROM's or what, but in MAME, the music quits playing at wave 14. Hey Flynn, just curious, can you tell me which version your boardset is? To tell, wait for the big grid in the demo mode and hold the joystick down. It'll tell a number in the bottom left. The ones in MAME are 6, 8 and 9.

That's a beautiful looking Nibbler you got there! (Man,that sounds so wrong to say.) :D

But seriously, what an awesome pick-up. Nibbler is a really fun game. Its deceptively easy at first, but the difficulty ramps up quickly.

What fixed the playing blind? One of my boards, you see the Nibbler, but NOT the maze or the croutons, I can only get to wav 12 on that board.

It's weird that it has a screw in light bulb. I've owned 2 Nibblers, neither had that, and for the record the first one I owned, was HUO. Since it was delivered from Rock-Ola to my door.

I notice your coin slots light up, my current machine does not. My original did. My current one does not have any bulb holders in the foor, but has the place for the bulbs to fit thru a hole to light the slots.

Hey Mods, can we get a filter where, if anyone types "HUO" into the posting window, the word "minty" is substituted? It would save people some embarrassment.

So true... besides, the constant misuse of the term around here just encourages people to jump on the claim every time they find a nice game...

My nibbler had the music, just like it is in mame. It also had the screw in bulb.
I think also nibbler was one of those games that got put into alot of different cabs, from leftover cabs at the factory or factory conversions. So there would be some cab differences.
There were kits for converting other rockola cabs on route too I think.

Nibbler NEVER had music in the arcade. MAME is totally WRONG.

Though I think it is a stretch to call it "music". It sounded more like someone playing with the buttons on a touch tone phone.

I dunno... that little diddy gets stuck in my head every time I play. Though it is a single note at a time. :D

I dumped the ROMs on one of sprinter's boards (with version 9) but haven't messed with them yet (was having problems with the floppy on the PC my burner is hooked to, and that PC is old and not connected to the internet)...I'm hoping to be able to figure out which ROM(s?) are missing from his board, and hopefully that'll be the one with the music. I know there were several open sockets. Both of his boards were like that (the other was a version 6, the one he's been using on his record attempts)
In MAME, every version plays music (6, 8 and 9, and the Olympia set (which also says 8). Although the Olympia set starts out faster and omits the music used on the 1st board, and starts with the 2nd music type, and stops playing it at 10 instead of 14. The Rock-Ola version 8 (which is listed as Nibbler set 3 in MAME) plays the first and 2nd music at the same time on board 2 for some reason.

Yeah, like playing the piano with only one finger. I wonder why the sound was so simplistic. By '82, lots of video games had multi-channel sound capability, even the ColecoVision.

Here my nibbler board ,
