I live in an apartment but have a large garage which is where I'm keeping my 2 cabinets. When I got them they smelled a bit musty from the warehouse they were in although there is no visible mold, etc. In fact, they have already improved and I'm planning on cleaning them carefully with mold/mildew prevention spray this weekend. However, I'm worried about dealing with humidity in the long term.

Any of you who keep your cabs in the garage, do you use any kind of dehumidifiers? Do they make smaller ones for inside a cabinet (not sure if that would be better or worse)?

I keep some project cabs in the garage here in GA and don't have any humidity issues. I suppose if your area is particularly humid you could throw a pail of Damp Rid in your cabs. I used to do that when I lived in Florida to keep a comics closet nice and dry, and it worked nicely. Pretty sure they make small dehumidifiers for gun cabinets, if your situation is really bad, but I'd wager the Damp Rid would be enough.

Make sure your garage door is sealing to the floor & walls too.

Thanks! That makes me feel better as it's definitely not nearly as humid here than down south (I'm originally from Orlando, FL). It had been rainy lately which worried me a bit but the fact that you have cabs in a garage in GA that are fine does make me feel a lot better about it. I'll check the door seals although I'm a bit limited as to what I can do since it's an apartment garage.

I didn't even think about Damp Rid so I'll probably pick some up just in case since it looks to be pretty cheap. Then if I run into any other issues I'll look into gun cabinet dehumidifiers. Thanks for the suggestions :)

around chicago when i had my garagecade moisture/sweating was a huge problem.

I used rolls of plastic sheeting and basically lined (using a staplegun) the whole inside of the garage (walls, ceiling) with plastic and then i used two electric heaters something like this:

It didnt make it toasty warm in there, but it stopped the sweating issues i was having and it was warmer in there versus outside. On a 30 degree day it would be around 50-55 in there.

I would think that if you have large swings in temp and lots of mositure in your air, then you will have a problem. Out in CA, no problem. But up in MA, I would think big problem.

Well, crap :(. I don't really feel comfortable leaving a heater on in there but I have mostly drywalled off the section where my cabs are (it sounds stupid but I did it for the practice). It probably wouldn't be hard to figure out a way to seal it off in a way that it's still accessible with a decent sized dehumidifier in there. I do run a heater from time to time in the winter when I know I'm about to work on something in the garage but it's always when I know I'm going to be home.
