I've was never a pinball player in arcades, but at some point I'd like to own one for my collection. The ones I'm thinking about now are just based on the theme of the game, and not on actual game play, which could obviously be bad. So please let me know what you think of the following pins:

Viper Night Driving
Simpsons (not sure the different versions out there)
Star Wars (again, I know nothing about the different versions)
South Park (see above)

Are any of those decent, or should I stay away? Thanks!

As much as I like the show... SP is terrible

I would consider it only if you're doing an animation theme..(FGY,TSPP, DE Simpson etc)

Honestly?

4 underwhelming titles for the money you would spend on them.

If you are going to buy pins, my recommendation is to actually PLAY the ones you are interested in before considering a purchase. If you don't enjoy them, they will just be expensive cabs collecting dust in your house.

not to hijack the thread but I heres a list of pinballs that look cool at first glance and I'd like to get some feedback on

Disco (1977)

Harlem Globe Trotters (1979)

Royal Flush Dexluxe (1983)

Radical (1990)

Spiderman (1980)

Skateball (1980)

Surfer (1976)

Viper Night Driving
Simpsons (not sure the different versions out there)
Star Wars (again, I know nothing about the different versions)
South Park (see above)

Wow - just wow???
The only game that might be worth having is the Data EAst Star Wars. But you better be a die hard SW fan otherwise it's not a keeper for most.

Is this a contest about who can list the worst games possible? :001_sbiggrin:

The Simpsons Pinball Party is fantastic (TSPP). Don't get the DATA EAST one.

Episode one on P2K is ok. Would rather have that than the DATA EAST one. But, RFM is the better P2K title.

South Park is mildly interesting to me and was a huge hit.

You into DE/SEGA?

Wow, glad I asked. Sounds like I picked some bad ones lol.

That's what I was looking for. Not really DE/SEGA nut, just like the themes of the games I asked about.

Are any of the James Bond ones good?

The best bet is to play different machines and see which ones YOU like.

I have owned my DE Simpsons now for over 10 years and still love it. I've played the newer, Stern Simpsons Pinball Party and thought it was terrible. I don't see why people prefer that one over the DE one. Also, in the 10 years I've owned my DE Simpsons, I have yet to have one problem with it. It's quite solid.

I've played a South Park and couldn't get into it. Poor game flow, if you ask me.

If you're looking for a newer pin, believe it or not, Family Guy is pretty darn fun. I am not a fan of the show and don't like it, but the pin is pretty darn good!

Another one I would recommend is Theater of Magic. Fun pin, good amount to do and not overly hard, yet challenging enough to keep you interested.

Again, the best bet is to play a bunch of machines and see what YOU enjoy. Asking collectors for their opinion will only confuse you and give headaches. The opinions are quite varied as each person has their own taste and style.

100% agreed.

I don't own any pins. But I've been extremely picky on which one I DO plan on getting. I've stated over and over on these boards, I have a straight passion for World Cup Soccer 94. I'm a wickedly huge footy (soccer) supporter. Along with a great theme for me to enjoy. I love the flow. I love the scoring and the ruleset.

THAT is the machine I want. Quite frankly, there are plenty of others I like, but I'd be much happier off if I got off to a proper start.

I would suggest you do the same. Play this list as much as possible. And then play others. Meet with local collectors and try them out. Seriously, fall in love with a pin before you commit. I'm not questioning your list, but the biggest tip is to understand what you're getting into with pins.

My choices would be, in no particular order:

Cirqus Voltaire
Scared Stiff
Addams Family
Theatre of Magic
Twilight Zone
Monster Bash
Medieval Madness
Spiderman
Iron Man

Got a very nice HUO in my basement. Next time you're in the Portland area feel free to ping me and come over to play it as long as you like (well that is until you start to stink anyway ;)

I've always preached play before you pay. But the reality of it is unless people understand each pin has it's own individual set of rules, it's just smacking a ball around. This gets boring real quick. The harsh reality is a pin must be played many many times over before a person can have a fair assesment of it. Unfortunately a CL seller isn;t going to set aside a full day for you to play a game so here's a few ideas for ya.

Use sites like pinpedia.com as a price guideline.
Use IPDB.com and read the reviews. While some of it's garbage take the good and leave the garbage behind.

If you own a Wii or an 360 download the Williams pinball hall of fame.
If you have a decent PC then download and run Virtual Pinball or Future Pinball and play some of those. This way you can take your time and find what really trips your trigger!

From my own perspective - if you like the racing theme either Getaway or Getaway 2 are good choices.

Sorry for the harsh reaction towards your list. I see a list of (at best) mediocre pins that have no "stay ability" to me. It's my personal preference but I feel the more pinball machines a person plays the more they start to figure out what they like and more importantly what they need a machine to have. If you start to acquire more and more pins that are shallow "rule wise" you'll start to get discouraged. There's a TON of pins out there. What ever you do, before you buy one you RTM and know how to get into diag mode and ensure everything works if machine is being sold as working. And don;t start - it only gets worse! I'm going to the coast for the weekend to go jump the dunes. You suckas have a good weekend!

Or, do you mean High Speed and High Speed 2: Getaway? There was an older machine called Getaway, but it's nowhere near as popular as High Speed. Personally, I love HS2. Great flow to that game!

I'd say buy any of those, you'll enjoy learning about them, and learning the rules and such is part of the fun! Just make sure you don't over pay, that way you can sell it later if you do get tired of it, without losing too much.

No worries at all, that's why I asked! Thanks for saving me from horrible pins.

The Simpsons Pinball Party, by STERN, is considered one of the best games of all time due to its extremely deep rule set. Only a handful of people on the planet have made it to its wizard mode. The Data East Simpsons is considered "okay".

That said, people have mixed opinions on the Stern version. Some think it's too hard or too complicated, or doesn't have good flow.

Star Wars, the data east version, isn't a terrible game, but it's looked down on, particularly by tournament players, because the most effective strategy involves shooting the same, easy shot over and over. To a casual player it's probably fine.

Viper night driving uses a funky glow in the dark ball and the game just feels... bad. But I do run into that occasional player that thought it was the coolest thing in the world. If you're looking for a good car theme, Indy 500 and High Speed 2: The getaway are both very cool. Indy 500 could probably be had for less.

I don't think South Park is a terrible game. It's just quite easy and you would probably get bored of it quickly. Though, if you're a novice player, who knows, it might be just the thing.
