how to's for cab stripping and refinishing?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I bought CitrusStrip from HD to get all of the original paint off of my Tempest cab, but it's looking like the walls underneath are just particle board. Does that sound right?

My additional questions are:

1. once you're down to the bare wood, I've seen people talk about using 240-grit paper. But my question is, are they BLOCK sanding the walls to get them smooth? Or is a D-A sander being used? I know the theory behind working on wood and sanding it, but I'm concerned about the sides of my cab looking all wavy if I don't do my homework prior.

2. When a game like Tempest is being restored, what kind of paint/primer do you use on the side walls to have them ready for side art rather than for any stenciling?

Those are all of the questions I can think of for now. Sorry if some think this should be in the "repair" section, I wasn't sure if I should drop it there or not since most repair-oriented questions are geared towards the hardware IN the cab, not the surface OF it.

Thanks!

It is VERY hard to sand particle board smooth. What I ended up doing on the panel above my pacman screen was to sand till I hit particle board. I then put a reasonably thick coat of Killz primer on it, let it dry and sand again till I saw specks of particleboard come through. Repeated till it was super smooth. This will try your patience, it took a week to get smooth enough for me to be happy with the results.

I'm not sure if you need to strip to the wood. Unless your paint is peeling, I've always sanded well, used Evercoat to fix dents and dings, sanded, primered, sanded then painted the final color over the primer. I never cared if it was to the wood or not, didn't seem worth the time. The primer levels things out. Just takes a while.

I rolled my paint on with a dense foam roller. Can't remember the paint type I used at the moment.

Thanks for the details guys. Yeah, I was going to strip them down because I'd had hopes that there might be some side art hiding under there, but it's not looking that way. So, I guess it wouldn't be necessary to go all the way down.

Did both of you hand sand your walls? Or did you use a DA or any kind of tools?

I have a new Skil rotary sander with a 5-6" sanding diameter for the bulk stuff, works really nicely. Then for details, just do it by hand.
