I've got a line on an old Defender CPO, which could possibly be NOS or an old repro but the guy doesn't know. Is there a simple way to check that I can tell him? For example, did originals have "Williams" on the backing paper?

Thanks, Dominic

Probably not anything on the backing, I have a NOS bubbles overlay and it is Scotch 3M 468 Hi Performance Adhesive

"how to tell NOS vs repro"

the NOS one will be a bitch to work with, the repro will be very easy

Thanks bjk7382 - the seller reported that the overlay had "Scotch 3M 467 Hi Performance Adhesive" on the back and it matched the other descriptions I could find (exact size, holes already cut, printed on underside, rigid), so I went ahead and got it.

yea as stated it has to have 468 Hi Performance Adhesive. 467 is almost always a repro, sorry man you bought the wrong one..

jk lol sounds like its NOS if everything matches up

Well, it was the same price as a repro, so I didn't lose out anyway. I didn't know of any repros that were done with the silkscreening on the reverse and a sandwich of layers (as this one is), so I thought it worth the purchase either way.

my defender has a metal control panel, I've only seen a few over the years. it is pretty bullet proof

You know that is actually a good question because now adays some of the reproduced stuff is so spot on. Bassically allot of times you have to trust the owner.

If only that were the case for Robotron overlays; I'm looking for one that's spot on but haven't heard of any yet. I have an old Fab Fan version that's pretty good (the colours are better than Arcade Shop's), but it has the thickened lines that seem to be quite common.

The original Defender CPOs were silk screened onto the back of a piece of lexan and then a two sided 3M adhesive film was applied over the artwork. So if it is flexible, then it is probably a repro.

467 adhesive may have been used on Defender. Trust me, Williams used whatever they could get their hands on.

It's not flexible and it does have the artwork on the reverse.

PS. My Stargate CPO, which I bought many years ago and was represented to me as NSO, doesn't have any 3M text on the back; instead (as I recall) it has the info for a Chicago printing outfit on it.

Wow, thats a weird one. Is it off a bootleg? I looked at the picture of Defense Command and it's different. There is another bootleg called Defense with no CP picture.

Is that a Willis CPO? Or posibly Taito? I've seen pictures of that design before. Is it stuck onto the metal plate or is it actually printed on the metal?
