So I got a pair of wico 3.5" shafts that need to be shined up.

They have a bit of rust and muck on them.. What do ya'll
use to clean these? Steel wool? Sandpaper? Metal polish?

:)

take it completely apart then put the joystick into a power drill. while its spinning i use a fine sand paper to take the rust off.

This ^^^. I go to an automotive store and get 400, 600 and 1000 grit wet n dry sandpaper (black stuff) and run it in that order. It looks very pretty when it is done. Then a quick wipe down with a light machine oil (it lasts longet than WD40) to prevent rust and you are good to go.

if you shine and polish many parts it might be worth it to get a bench grinder and convert it to polisher I think you can get them fro around $49 and the buffing wheels for maybe $10
use some rust gel to remove the bulk of the rust if real bad.
then alittle steel wool.
then go to town with some buffing compond

will save you ALOT of time and will give you the best results

I do alot of shafts, pinabll parts and the likes all like this
including my video pinball shooter assembly thats looks like it was chrome plated
Ill have to dig up some pics. and another tutorial may be inorder

What Rich said is the best way to go.

I'm very impressed with the level of maturity in this thread.

and a drill... worked out well. Thank You for the advice everyone.
