OK, Let me start off by saying that I've only had my 108-1 cart for a few days now and previously had a 48-1 cart for only a couple weeks prior, so I'm not claiming to be an expert on these. Just sharing my short experience since I have seen many concerns about these carts, mainly how to save settings.
I think I'm in the right category to post this also. I wouldnt really consider this "info & help", just general discussion on the cart. Guess Ill find out later if it gets moved or not.
The main gripe I hear about these is that most games are set to the most difficult settings (Level 8) and so on, and that your settings are lost once you turn the machine off. You change your soft dip settings and now the game is set to your fancy, but the settings revert back to the same settings as before once you turn off your machine.
Now heres a little trick I learned. Start the game, then hit your test switch and change your soft dip settings as you normally would (I personally prefer level 4 as its the default setting for most Neo-Geo games). Save your settings as normal, the game loads back up as normal. Now heres the trick. it WILL NOT save these settings onto the cart UNTIL you reset the game (you know, where you hold P1 start for 5 seconds to return to the main menu). Once you change your settings, start the game back up, then reset to the main menu, your settings should be saved. If you skip any of these steps and then turn the machine off, it will not save your changes.
I'm finding that once you successfully save your settings, they are permanently saved on the cart (unless you change them again). So far I've changed & saved settings for about half of the games on my cart, and they are still saved after a few days of powering on and off.
Theres also speculation that saving settings varies based on the PCB you are using. As far as I can tell, the PCB only saves your time/date settings and accounting info. Game settings (at least for the multicart) seem to be saved on the cart itself, and so far there doesnt seem to be any limit to how many games you can change and save. Like I said, I've done about half of them this way and all the changes I made are still there.
I will give you a word of warning. Do not change settings on Alpha Mission II. I did that with the 48-1 cart and then the cart would lock up every time I tried to start that game for some reason. I had a few reset issues with that cart as well so maybe its just an issue with the 48-1, but now I have a 108-1 and I'm not taking any chances. I will tell you now, some of these carts seem a little buggy (what do you expect for the price tag?) so change settings and save at your own risk.
Now with all that said, I think I will eventually post a YouTube video discussing this and doing a demonstration with my 108-1. But I wanted to share it here first and hopefully get some feedback on how this works for others as well as if the same holds true for other multi MVS carts (like the 100-1, 111-1, 138-1 and so on). So I'm basically asking everyone who tries these steps to respond and let me know "how it went".
Thanks.
