How to replace joystick-FAQ on how to work with machines??

Is there a book out there or faq that helps people understand how to fix and maintain there arcade games. i need to know how to replace my joystick on my unit and have no idea how to. can anyone help?

Well then, it probably has a normal 8-way in it. There are snaps underneath that you undo by reaching in through the coin door. Once unsnapped, the control panel should lift up or swing down on a hinge (depending on the cabinet).

Once you can access the bottom of the control panel, you'll see an c-clip on the bottom of the joystick shaft. Pull that off, and the joystick shaft will now pull out of the top of the control panel. Then you can remove the four bolts holding the joystick base to the bottom of the control panel, and remove it. There may be a dust washer between the base and the control panel also, although sometimes you'll see it installed on top and it comes off with the shaft.

Installation of the new joystick is the reverse of the above. If you buy a brand-new joystick, it usually comes with installation instructions.

Obviously you will have to remove the wiring to the switches and move them to your new joystick. The best way is to take pictures of what wires go where, and maybe label each group as to what is UP, DOWN, LEFT, and RIGHT.

E-clips are held in w/ pressure.

I just pull down on the actuator to create some space around the e-clip and put a pair of pliers on it and yank it straight out.

Make sure that you have a good grip on it and know how it comes out or you can spring fire that thing and never be able to find it again.

Some guys remove it in an empty box.

So simple, but such a great idea haha!

I tend to open a pair of needle nose pliars and use the tips of each side to put equal pressure shoving the clip off of the shaft. This works, but you should impliment the 'box' method. Another way, if their is room in the gaps of the clip, is to use split ring pliars to take it off properly, but most folks don't have those. Lastly, take a quick photo of the assembly so you can reference the direction and location of all things when you put it back on or replace etc...

I just put my finger along the outside edge, then use a small-tip flat-head screwdriver and stick it in the gap between the shaft and the clips, then rotate the screwdriver head to start it off. then a little pry and it pops loose. My finger keeps it from flying off, and I pull it off...

Yeah, that's the way I do it too :) Evidently whoever had one of my cabs didn't know this though...they drilled out the hole in the CP so the ball would fit thru from the bottom. Made the hole so big a regular dust washer keeps jamming in it, so I removed the dust washer.
