How to remove a bonded yoke from your CRT.. Video..

Need to save a bonded yoke from a CRT? What you want to use is a 2/10amp car battery charger. You want the terminals across the horizontal winding. Heat it up for about 8/10 mins on 2amp... if its not enough heat kick it to 10amp and it will be ready to free up from the bonding very shortly after. So far I have not destroyed / cooked any windings! The battery charger MUST NOT have a auto shuttoff / protection

and here is the video of me necking / destroying the tube.

Thanks for the tip. I ran into a tube swap candidate once that had a bonded yoke. I had to toss it since I couldn't get the yoke off.

Very cool! I haven't had to do this yet, but good to know there's at least one way to do it. I've always thought that the yoke was held in by the clamp for the most part. I guess it never dawned on me that they would use some additional stuff to hold it in place.

But why would anyone use a bonded yoke in any case? What's the point?

Monitor and television manufacturers do that. If the tube goes bad, you get a new yoke with it already pre-aligned (plug n play). If the yoke goes bad, then you get a new tube with it. Naturally, these tubes with bonded yokes cost more.
