OK, I know this would usually be an easy answer just by checking current requirements.
In most of the games I have, the voltages were already standard 5 and 12.
But this install involves modifying the boards to allow them to use 5 and 12 vs some oddball voltages.

I have a Pole Position and want to install a switcher.
The instructions say to use an "11 amp" switcher, but then have you installing a fan on it.
What size has anyone used in Pole Position games?

I see the fuse for the 10.6vdc in a PP is a 20 amp... pretty hefty.
(the install is done using the 12vdc supply into the 10.6 lines with modification)

I am trying to understand if I should use one of these:

or a larger one with fan built in:

What is the difference between "Golden Tee" power supplies and 8-liner/arcade supplies?

I modified a Pole Position cockpit recently to run off a switcher. I used an AT style computer power supply, 200w. Probably overkill, I think it's rated for 20A on the 5v. But, it works great, and the thing has been really reliable.

I have plenty of AT and ATX power supplies from a box of parts I got when I picked up my Golden Tee...do you have instructions on how you did the mod? I was looking for the Star Tech Journal that everyone seems to refer to, but the link is no longer working. Just don't want to blow something up! LOL

I believe Star Tech Journal removed that link when they redesigned their website.

The original Pole Position switcher conversion article was in a back issue of Star Tech Journal around 1990. At the time, 11 amp power supplies were the maximum amperage available. So the article recommended using an 11 amp supply with a fan blowing on it to keep it cool. Today we can use a standard "Peter Chou" screw terminal 15 amp supply without the need of a fan. You could even use a computer style power supply if properly modified for this application.
