Hey All...

Just picked up a Megatouch Ion and the fan noise is obnoxiously loud. Hoping someone might have some tips/links on how to make this thing run more quietly.

Thanks!
todd

Hook the 110v fan to your 12v output. It will be about 1/10th as loud... ;-)

(yes, I know the difference between AC and DC... just joking)

I would replace the fan. You should be able to find a better fan.

That's where I'm going with this...hoping someone might have gone down this road and would have some fans to suggest?

Looks like there are 4 fans and one in the power supply?

There are 110v ac fans that make less noise but they are not typical cheap.

There are temperatured control computer fans you might want to try but if your arcade machine runs hot normally the temperature control fans will make your arcade machine noisy too.

It could be that your fan or fans have bearing or balance issue and thus you arcade box sounds like a jet taking off..

If you go replacement route check for the db noise that the fan are rated at.

Good luck or wear ear plugs.

I've done some digging around...

It looks like the stock fans are mostly odd sizes... such as 52mm x 52mm x 5mm (and 55mm x 55mm x 10mm).... and most of the quiet running PC fans are 50mm x 50mm x 10mm (just as an example).

There are NOS fans that can be bought as replacement. They are bearing fans (just like the ones on the machine right now)...

Question is... try to retrofit odd sized fans into the machine? Or go stock and hope that new fans are slightly less loud?

Check th specs of the old fans in your machine and compare them with quieter pc fans..
That should help you to decide which route you want to go..

I'm having a tough time identifying specs beyond size... I'm assuming you're talking air flow rate?

If you haven't already, thoroughly clean out any dust that's in there. Also check the stock fans for dust build up. I'd recommend doing your best to tidy up the wiring as well to allow the most amount of airflow possible.

I used a couple of quiet 50mm PC fans in mine. They will be slightly smaller and won't completely fit, but they will work fine. I was able to secure them with 2 or 3 screws which was plenty to firmly mount the fans in place without movement. The stock fans merit/ami supplied are terrible with regards to db noise. Just replacing the stock fans with quiet rated PC fans makes a huge difference.

In addition to that, I added one of these slim fans, pointed directly at the cpu to "bulletproof" it a bit. I had to do some improvised modding and secured it with a screw or two, some double-sided foam tape and a large zip tie across the front for insurance.

My ION EVO runs very quiet and I've never had a single heat issue with it.

Jim -

Do you think a 50x50x10mm fan will fit in the places that currently have a 52x52x5mm fan (really concerned with the width more than anything...).... Just curious if you remember having to have slightly wider (10mm or 15mm fans v 5mm fans) dimensions.

Thanks, Todd

I don't remember having problems with depth (which I assume you mean with the 10mm), although I don't have the exact dimensions. I think they'd be okay for spots on the back bezel with the vented slots, but not sure about the lower area that has the fan horizontally mounted with rubber cushions on either side. My advice would be to simply try it. Fans are cheap and you'll probably have to mod it one way or the other.
