How to Make a Joust 2 CPO? Is it possible with photographs?

Well... no dice on Joust 2 CPO. From what I see, it's common knowledge that replacement CPOs are pretty much non-existent.

I have a Joust 2 with 95% good CPO (minus a cigarette burn and cracking). I thought about taking the control panel off, taking buttons and sticks out and photographing it (on a tripod). Said photos could then be matched up and played with to turn them into something we can use.

Does this sound feasible? I know most arcade CPO's reproduced are vectorized which I really know very little about (played with inkscape for a week or so).

Has anyone ever attempted this? Would it get close to perfect results?

I guess what I am saying is, unless somebody ponies up for a NOS (which may or may not even exist anymore) is there any way to do this, other than photographing? Is this a decent method? Has anyone had any experience with this?

Just looking at the panel, it looks straightforward, no real "transitional colors" or little dots and such. It's pretty much solid colors.

EDIT: Also, same thing on the bezel, though the CPO would be a priority right now IMO.

I have heard of attempts to reproduce CPO's in this fashion. They are usually less than rousing successes, but when you don't have anything better to go on.

I found a photograph of a Mystic Marathon CPO online. Blew it up, deskewed it, touched it up and printed it in sections on an injet printer. Not great, but definitely better than nothing (which is exactly what I had).

To have a chance of getting it to work, you will need to photograph it at the highest possible resolution you can.

No on both. Photography for repro art is better than nothing, but probably not worth the trouble.

Scan it in in pieces at a high res and then hand off to someone who can piece it together in Photoshop and then recreate a vector version in Illustrator. If you don't have a scanner you could send the CP to someone who is able to scan it. It takes a lot of time and skill to do all the steps properly but the end result is worth it.

got an interest in this one too. just got my joust 2 machine and it is also about 95% with some cracking. too many projects on the go at the moment to do the cpo scanning but when they are done, i will have time to have a crack at scanning my cpo. that is unless someone else has scanned it in the meantime!
please keep me in the loop if you do the photo thing to get started.

A rare Joust 2 CPO 95% good and you want to replace it? Doesn't make sense really, just devalues a rare machine. I could see it if it's trashed, but mostly just fine I don't think I'd do that.

i did wonder whether i could simply protect the damaged one, iirc the damage (cracking) is typical - on the top curved edge - and I would like to have a repro one in reserve for 5-20 years down the track...would a large coating like the pinball playfield protective coating do the trick ?

Thats sort of where I am at too. The CPO isn't bad now, but I would like to get the ball rolling for when/if it is. It is in too good of shape to take off, but who knows later down the road... hell I may even find another in better shape with a bad CP. I REALLY like this game. It's a bit different from the original Joust, but it is a dang entertaining game!

Mine is in pretty good shape, that should make a decent candidate for basing a repro on I would think. It's gonna need some digital touching up where the bad cigarette burn is, and there are about 6 small scorch marks (yellowing really) on P2 blue background, like someone dropped ashes while playing and pushing buttons.

I just feel it needs reproduced. It's rare, next to no chance of finding a NOS (which would be almost sacrilege to put on a CP without scanning first IMO). So, if it doesn't exist, might as well take a crack at it.

On scanning, what type of scanner is it you would use? Is there a hand held type, or is it like a document scanner? I am mainly just wondering a bit more about the process.

Got to go for now,
Mark

i only have an a4 sized slimline usb desktop scanner (canon lide20)
not the most ideal. if i took it to work i could scan A3 sized (almost 24" wide) but only at 400dpi max iirc. prob have to scan the flat sides in 3 scans, then some creative scanning on the rounded corners (the game is tucked away at the moment cant get to it but it is coming out next to be worked on.)

cheers! Andy

If I am remembering correctly, the "bottom" rounded corner is solid purple color, and the "top" may be a solid color also. Seems like the corners could simply be superimposed on the original scans. I think you could take some measurements with a flexible ruler to get the positioning on the ostrich to pegasus transformation exact. I just wonder how else the corners could get scanned... hmm...

I just found a local place that can print up to 4' wide (WOW!) I may check and see if there are any scanners around that are large. I imagine sign shops, printing shops and such may be the place to check.

the pegasus does wrap from the front up and over the top so the top rounded edge will need to be scanned in a few segments too
