Hello, I was putting together a Arkanoid cocktail and when I put the board in it only plays in upright mode. How do you identify the upright vs the cocktail boards? Is there a way to convert the upright board to cocktail mode? Please let me know. Thank You!!

I think most of the bootleg boards do cocktail mode. I'm not sure about original boards doing ct, but I've only had a couple of em.

Matt O. is knowledgeable about Arkanoid, maybe he'll chime in.

Well on mikes arcade the associated dip switches for the 22pin version has cocktail mode.

It also has 2 sets of dip switches where as the other only has one?

I dont have access to my pcbs at the minute so cant check.

Darren is correct. The majority of the boots do CT and earlier Arkanoids were solely upright. However, I bought a factory board from a member here that can do CT. It was explained to me that a ROM revision was done later on by Taito to compete with the boots being able to cocktail flip.

So could I have the ROMs rewritten to have cocktail mode?

Maybe...

Gotta be careful, as real Arkanoid is protected with a microcontroller. I'm not sure if different ROM sets will work properly with different MCUs (which have embedded code programmed in them as well).

FWIW, in MAME, I don't see any non-bootleg US versions of Arkanoid that have the cocktail mode. Only the Japanese and boot versions. So to even try it, you'd need to get dexterro6010 (or someone else with a legit Taito PCB having code the supports CT mode) to dump the ROMs. Then they may or may not work with your MCU.

Still waiting for Matt to drop some knowledge on us. Or maybe some day I'll have my Taito Arkanoid back on the workbench, and play with different ROM versions to see what works nad what doesn't.

BTW, dexterro6010: on your legit Arkanoid w/CT mode, which dip position controls CT/UR mode?

Good question. It was already set for CT when I got it and didn't come with any documentation. However, I will post the dip switch settings I currently have on here. I'm guessing a switch in the "on" position would be the one; if memory serves, I think it's switch 7 or 8 but I can't remember how many dip banks the board has. I'll take a look later tonight or tomorrow morning and post here.

Also, I don't have a ROM burner but planning on getting one for an APB board I need to burn new ROMs for. When I get it I'd gladly dump them for whoever.

While you're at it, check to see what yours says at boot up:
- "WAIT" followed by attract mode
- "HARDWARE CHECK WAIT UNTIL TIMER REACHES '0'" followed by attract mode
- "HARDWARE CHECK WAIT UNTIL TIMER REACHES '0'" followed by "NOTICE THIS GAME FOR USE IN JAPAN ONLY..."
- other :)

"HARDWARE CHECK WAIT UNTIL TIMER REACHES '0'" followed by attract mode is what my real one says. I have a bootleg board also but it will not boot, just restarts when it hits zero. There is no way to flip a dip to put it in cocktail mode on the real board.

Ok, so like a dummy, I did not take notice of the DIP switch settings when I opened up the cabinet. I'll do that later when I get home. I did, however, take some pictures and a video. :)

Pictures of the board (best I could do with my iPhone):

OK, here's the deal. The real Taito Arkanoid boards do not have a dipswitch selectable cocktail mode. It is a separate ROM version (code ROMs are at IC16 and IC17), protected by a microcontroller (IC14). So you need to swap the two EPROMs and the 68705 microcontroller.
Here are the chip labels (for IC14, 16, and 17) you are looking for for the cocktail boards:

Arkanoid cocktail (US): 20, 18, 19
Arkanoid cocktail (World): 20?, 22, 21
Tournament Arkanoid cocktail (US): 38, 37, 36

I don't know of any good dumps of the microcontroller code (the chips are protected, and not easy to crack). What is in MAME is just a hack... they just go around the protection, and they've dummied up the microcontroller data (so the pointers to the level data are correct). So don't try to use those to program a 68705 for a real board... it's not going to work. And the MAME driver for Arkanoid is a bit of a mess, particularly around the ROM versions, so don't trust what you see there.

hi everyone and happy new year ^^
maybe 3 years after the last answer someone has found the working method to make an Arkanoid upright pcb to a Cocktail one ?
I have nearly finished my CT but my two boards are upright :/
thanks

I believe I spelled it all out in post #15. Is something not clear?

Whoops, sorry! Was reading while watching a movie last night and having a couple cocktails. My bad. I probably totally flipped past your post on my phone and/or misread his question. Ugh.
