How to erase, read, and burn EPROMs video. Convert VS game to another. OMGWTFBBQ!

I made a little instructional video showing how to erase, read, and burn EPROMS. I am sure a lot of you are already doing this but some here might enjoy the vid.

I show how to convert a NINTENDO VS Soccer to a VS ICE CLIMBER in the video.

I am using an Needham EMP-10 in DOS.

Check it out here:

Nice video John, Im sure alot of the new VS collectors will enjoy this video. I think i need get me some IC...if only it were dual play :(

That's some very helpful information. I've been a little intimidated to try it, but I've already started looking for a programmer (anyone know of any other good options?).

I've been wanting to learn how to do this , thanks for the video .

Yeah, you NEED Ice Climber! Def' one of the better VS. games. Was so bummed when the Japanese 12 ROM version didn't use both monitors. This game would be 1000% awesomer! :)

I have the same programmer that John does. It's a good one. Put up a saved search on eBay for it, and you should be able to snag it for under $50 shipped.

Awesome video! I still have yet to buy a rom burner. Need to get a pc first.

is there a particular Mame rom site you choose to use to get your codes from? Thanks for the lesson on this I've been wondering how to do this for awhile.

I have had good luck with rom nation dot net or rom dash world dot com.

So you recommend the Needham EMP-10 ? I think thats the one I'll pick up .

DOS is pretty tough to use but if I follow your video I think I could learn how to use it and burn some roms .

I used to play games in DOS , like X-Wing and Wolfenstein .

I am sure others will recommend other burners but I absolutely recommend the EMP-10 based on my experience. It's also the one Spaeth told me to get long ago and I listened to him. :) But, you'll need an older computer with a serial port, keep that in mind. I boot into DOS from a floppy. It's possible to run the EMP-10 in windows with the newer software but I could never get it to work. DOS for me has been very stable.

The software for the EMP-10 (with the XP driver) can be downloaded via the wayback machine and here:

I added the latest EMP-10 software to my site. It can be tricky to find since Needham went out of business and their site is gone. The zip file has the latest release and the windows driver for the EMP-10. I never had any luck with the driver and getting the EMP-10 to work in Windows. The software runs in a DOS window when you launch it in XP. I have no issues with the device when booting into DOS.

Software is in the "downloads" section on the bottom of this page:

The EMP-10 will only work with Win98SE at the latest. That's what I'm running it with now. At least with Win98, I can launch Firefox 2.0 and hit a few rom sites in case I need to grab a rom image.

You can get an EMP-20 to work with WindowsXP, so I'm told. I don't own one, but that's what I read.

I have an old Dell C series laptop that I use for my eprom programming. It's hilarious, I can boot that laptop in less than 10 seconds, and it takes less than 2 seconds to shut down. Man, I miss THOSE days. :D

According to Needhams site (posted above) the driver is for NT/2000/XP?

NEI Device Programming Software and Drivers.

Installer Notes
To install the EMPWin Device Programming software for Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP, follow the steps below (please note that the Full Version already contains the Algorithm Pack and Service Pack updates).

1. Choose the installer
Some browsers may require you to hold-down the shift key to download):

2. Run the Installer
Choose one of the following: Double-click on the file, or use the Start->Run dialog to find and execute the file. The installer will ask you a few questions, simply follow the prompts and the installer will make sure the software is installed correctly. ( Please note: Windows NT/2000/XP users you must make sure that you have administrator privileges before running the installer, and you will be required to restart your computer before proceeding to the next step.

3. Run the Software
Click on your "Start" button on the taskbar, then click "Programs". You'll notice that a new entry now appears under the programs menu, called "Needham's Electronics" - select this entry. Then click "EMP Device Programing software." Congratulations - it's that simple!

If someone finds a way to get the EMP-10 working with XP, that would be MOST AWESOME. I couldn't get it to work.

I added a serial port card to my win 7 pc to run my old data i/o 29B. If its just a matter of needing a serial port this is what I suggest. Dont bother with the usb to serial adapters, they dont work in most cases.
You could also save yourself the trouble and get a willem GQ-4X which has well proven itself the past couple years.

That one looks really nice , but its $600 ! I could see for a business spending that much but for a few roms here and there thats a bit pricey .
