How to convert NES Zapper to a Playchoice 10 Gun

F'n AWESOME man!!!!! I love how you give your wife the FU button on the phone to finish arcade stuff. CLASSIC. I have never done that. LOL.... Your project has turned out great. BTW would this work on a Dual PCB also?

It will work on the Dual monitor also, but you will have to verify the colors of the wires inside your dual are the same as my single. If they are not, then you will have to trace the wires back to the harness to make sure they are wired correctly. If it is not wired right it won't work properly.

I'm not sure, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Just make sure to match the wires properly.

Wow! Can this be done for a Red Tent?

Yes, but just like the dual you will have to verify the wiring is the same, and if it is not then you will have to wire it accordingly.

Same setup for a dual monitor.

The red tent (and other Vs. I would assume) have an adapter that goes where the coin door gets its power.

Great video! Cracked me up when the gun fell to the ground. Wouldn't that have sucked if it busted into peices? lol.

How is your range with the zapper? Can you hold the zapper away at a decent distance and still be dead-on?

It will shoot accurately as far back as the cord will reach 5-8foot.

This is great. I'm in the process of wiring a gun up on my dual system. On the arcade harness you said the violet was 5v, then the trigger and hit were the next two. It wasn't clear to me what wire was hit and trigger. If you were saying them in order, then the trigger went to your blue wire, and hit goes to your yellow? My colors are different but I think the position for each in the connector will be the same.

Thanks!

NES Zapper:
White wire - +5v
Blue wire - Hit
Purple wire - Trigger
Brown wire - Ground

Playchoice 10 (Single Monitor):
Purple wire - +5v - (R on harness)
Blue wire - Hit - (P on harness)
White wire - Trigger - (N on harness)
Brown & Green wire - Ground - (V & 18 on harness)

Playchoice 10 (Dual Monitor):
(Don't know color) - (14 on harness) - Ground (gun)
(Don't know color) - (16 on harness)- Ground (alarm)
(Don't know color) - (17 on harness) - Trigger
(Don't know color) - (18 on harness) - Hit
(Don't know color) - (19 on harness) - +5v

I don't have a dual monitor, so I am not sure of the wire coloring, but with this information you should be able to look at your edge connector (harness) and see what color to fill in the blank. I hope this helps.

On the male connectors leading to the Gun I'm assuming the Red one is power. On the white connector which one should be:

Trigger / Hit / 5v ?

First, never assume. Assuming makes an ass out of you and me.

Second, I am not quite sure what you are referring to, sir. Both the NES Zapper and the Playchoice light gun do not have a red wire in their circuits. If you are referring to the wire colors for the dual monitor Playchoice, then I am not sure which wire is which, because I do not own a DMPC.

However, below is a chart I created for the for the DMPC. If I were you, to be sure I was connecting it up right, I would trace each wire back to the edge connector (the connector that connects to the playchoice game board). Like most edge connectors, it is labeled down its spine with letters and numbers. As you can see below, regardless of the wires color, you can determine which wire leads to each individual pin on the "male connector" from the edge connector. I hope this information helps.

Not a red wire, but a red connector. On the PC10 (single or dual) there's a white connector with 3 wires and a red one with (room for 3) but only 1-2 wires. When I said Red I meant the connector.

As for my question I found the anwser was the middle wire on the white connector is the "hit" one so that's the one I'm having an issue with.

sorry for the confusion.

This is great! I might add a NES port and put where the right hand mech goes!

Anyone know how to make a homemade Vaus controller for the NES/Playchoice? That would be awesome!

No worries; I am glad you got the issue sorted.
Cheers,

I second the added NES port. I don't have headers to connect a gun to the countertop model. Can I splice it in to the first player controls? And how about a player 2 Start and select?
