How to converge a monitor

Last edited:
Just finished up on another Rauland, this one was not so easy! It took a little over a week, an hour one day, then 2 or so the next, probably a total of a little over 8 hours........ but finally got it right.

I used the new convergence strips mostly but for some issues, I had to use the original Atari strips, as the newer ones just did not have the desired effect on the display.

Thank you Dez for the links of the materials necessary to fabricate the convergence strips, I placed the order and will make an assortment of my own......

FWIW I just received 50 Yoke Tabs/ Convergence strips from WG. They charged me $7.20 shipped for 50. They sell them in packs of 25 for $3.00 a pack.

I contacted and dealt with Jeff Gardner. His email is on the contact page. Very nice man and a pleasure to deal with.

Adhesive under the blue strip and a piece of metal on the other end.

Nice to hear :)

Received all the materials and made 3 custom sets of the convergence strips.
All are 120mm long
All are 10mm wide
One set has 10mm metal.
One set has 20mm metal.
The smaller batch has 30mm metal.
None have adhesive, I will be using Scotch brand double sided tape from a dispenser, it is very thin and sufficient until I glob the hot glue as a final step once convergence is completed.

Thank you again Dez for the links.....
Jeff

Nirvanagence . . :)

Not on the 25" but I had the same issue on a 19" Rouland and all it took was many many convergence strips and eventually and slowly I made progress and moved all the colors into the right positions.
Just time and perseverance.....
Good luck
Jeff

Great thread and tips here! Thanks!

I found this page with lots of information on CRT tubes. There is a pretty good description of convergence a little past half way down the page. Search the page for "Detailed Purity and Static Convergence Adjustment Procedure" (sorry, the page has no way to direct link to the section). It has a pretty good generic description of whats happening when spinning the convergence and purity rings together and separately. It helped me get a mental image of what is going on...

You can copy the link at the top, in the TOC. http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/crtfaq.htm#crtadj

Worked for two hours on getting better convergence on monitor (upper left corner was off) just doing static convergence on WG7193. The upper left corner looked great. Was ready to but cabinet back together and then looked at it again and noticed bottom left corner was now off. I guess I will try convergence strips (really don't want to adjust the yoke). Any other recommendations?
Thank you

If it's just a corner, then convergence strips are your best friend. Adjusting the yoke is for larger areas around the edges.

By oriented not sure what you mean. I used convergence grid and it was horizontal (assume you mean one of those).

Sorry...... what I meant was what direction the CRT was facing when converged, (North/South/East/West)... It must face North or South while being converged.

I also noticed that once perfectly converged (as humanly possible), once placed into the final resting place for the game, there is sometimes a slight change in the display. Sometimes after a few days of play it gets better, sometimes not.

Also, there can be interference from other magnetic / electronic devices as well as the wiring in the walls.
