How to converge a monitor

Thanks for the heads up but the rings that I have definitely act on the display as they should, that is not the problem I am having.

I am beginning to think that there will be no way to get this 100% as everything is a compromise, I change one thing to correct one problem and then another materializes on another part of the display........

So I will have to try and "bury" the imperfections where they will not be noticed, this all depends on the game it is going into......

This almost caused a divorce! I kid you not............
I was determined to figure this out once and for all so I took a few days off from work and spent those days and the weekend at my bench and it paid off.

I still have not gotten back to the 25" green band problem but will for sure. I did get 2 NOS 19" Raulands done to perfection! (as humanly possible). I have learned for every action there is another issue that usually materializes but some times (!!!) it does work out and the display looks great.

I have gotten over my fear (for better or worse) of getting zapped and several times I have heard the crackle of the ionizing air right before it was to have arced into my forearm but luckily I am paying attention and get out in time.

I am currently onto my third 19", this one for my Quantum and I am confident that I will be able to resolve the "green band" problem on the 25" very soon.

My advise for fellow collectors is just do it. I have spent over 18 hours (easily) on learning convergence techniques over the last two weeks and I have plenty more to learn. You have to submerse yourself into this, there is no other way.

And yes you will get shocked but after the first time, it is not so bad. Just make sure you always have one hand away from any metal and it won't go through your chest! I use a wooden support rig for the CRT's, it is not conductive and gives you leverage while hovering over the CRT.

I shall overcome!

NOTE:
When converging a vector monitor, make sure it is in the proper orientation before starting the procedure, you will save yourself much time..........
(Horiz/Vert - SW/Q)

OK.......
One more bare Rouland to go then back to the 25"!
Once the 25" "green band" issue is resolved, I am going to finally touch up the convergence on my Black Widow (Amp Rack) and then take on a RASTER!!!!
That should be another week-long learning curve...........

Nice to see this great progress. Keep it up :)

If I did not have a Wife, Family, Job and two businesses, I would be already on my way....
I always wanted to check out TX.....

Hey guys, had a convergence question (didn't seem worth making a new thread)

What typically causes convergence to get worse?

I've had a cab with a 25" K7000a, and I -know- the blue convergence in the upper corners, and top area have gotten worse since I first picked it up last year. Specifically the upper right corner, where the blue convergence is -really- bad, noticably worse then when I first aquired it.

All I've done is move the cabinet around a bit; not very far, and done carefully.

I know in my heart of hearts that the K7000a probably needs a cap kit, as i've got a slight pincushion issue on both sides. But I've been dragging my feet since it is nearly impossible to get to the chassis due to the way the cab is designed, and the color is still really good.

The blue convergence that's off in the corners is your dynamic convergence, which is based on how the yoke sits against the tube neck. Depending on how secure the yoke is, it's definitely possible for it to get bumped out of alignment. It doesn't take much for it to become "off." If all you've done differently is moved the cabinet, I'd guess that the yoke moved (even the slightest bit), causing the dyn convergence to change. It's also possible that one (or more) of the convergence strips, or one of the wedges that the yoke rests against, came loose and/or fell.

Has anyone sourced the convergence strips yet?

I finally got my kortek 2914 up and running but the convergence in a couple corners is absoulutely horrible.

D-OH!!!!

time to rob some from another monitor i guess.

I have encountered nothing so frustrating as convergence on this monitor..

i dont think it would be so bad but i cant be rough on this yoke because im afraid ti will fall apart again so i guesss its going to be a ton of strips instead.

Convergence strips

I just make my own.

I just used pieces of metal from the project knife, electrical tape, and a cut up old credit card to tape it to. Seems to work OK.

Been meaning to experiment with the "buisness card" magnets that are thin and flexible, but am concerned that the weakening of the magnetic material over time would cause a drift.

Yep. Any of those super cheap utility knives that ratchet. Break a piece off, tape it to cardboard or whatever (I used one of those flimsy yard signs and cut it into little strips.) Works great.
