Just got a Defender 3 slot with the Susan B Anthony Dollar slot in the middle. I have heard of these before, but have never seen one until now. Just curious.

No idea, but can you post a picture? Do you know if there was anything special about these like early or late production run or just a coin door add on to accept higher dollar denominations?

In 1980, I thought this was the standard coin door. I may be wrong, but I recall all the Defender machines I saw had the 3 coin slots. Granted some of them had the "W" logo in the center slot, but I also thought they were all able to have 3 denominations, just like the pinball machines.

I am sure someone much smarter than me can help more, but that's me recolection (it's also what is on the flyers, but that's not always 100% accurate either.

Chrome coin doors are slightly more desirable... that's about it. If I had a choice between two Defenders in the same condition, one with the chrome the other the black, i'd take the Chrome... but I, personally, wouldn't pay more for one.

Does it have a Susan B. Anthony coin mech in it?

Here is a picture of the door.

I have seen them before, mostly on pinballs, but I do recall seeing some on Williams video games of the era (I'm old enough to rmember them in the wild, LOL).

Classic Playfield reprodictions did repro these (the plastic inserts), but I don't know if they have any left.

Mine looks like justaguy's. Just says Dollars.

I remember those as well. Back then, I was a small kid and didn't think much of it. They seemed to be normal on Defenders. Didn't play much pinball, though. I thought it was just how they were.

I have a variation here with middle door plasticed over. Coin slot behind it though.

Early production run Defenders used chrome pinball doors. Standard was a 2 slot with the center slot blocked out. But they were building them with coin doors stolen literally off the pinball assembly line so they would have used any coin doors that were there, including 3 door. Also operators would retrofit them with the third coin slot. And there are a small number of reimports that would have had the third coin slot, particularly from the German and French markets.
