These seem to be pretty rare as I have only ever seen 1 set on a Tetris machine. Are these really that hard to get or am I not looking hard enough? I'd really like a pair of them.

I don't know if I would call them rare, how about "uncommon." They were only used on a few games. I know Gauntlet used them along with Dragon Spirit and Rolling Thunder, but I'm sure there are several others.

finding ones not worn out is rare. Luckily you can rebuild them. But that can be expensive.. Also there are also 2 types. Leaf and microswitch.

you can add cyberball and indiana jones to that list.

I always thought they looked pretty awesome.

Joystick gurus: how do they compare to other joysticks in terms of playability?

I have a pair of those sticks on a Cyberball. They have an annoying problem where the foam rubber actuator ring likes to slip off. A previous owner applied a few little drops of glue to hold one of them on and I need to do the same to the second stick.

I've got one for my Indiana Jones. It was floppy when I first got it and sent it off to get rebuilt. Mailed it out on Wednesday, got a call on friday while he was working on it, in the mail on saturday and got it back by monday. I even replaced the stick with NOS parts. Best $75 I've ever spent! Mine is ridiculously awesome now in its response and it pops back to center every time!

Of course, the fact that mine had wooden repair parts initially didn't help!

I actually ended up getting an extra one as a freebie with my $95 non-working 720 I picked up off E-bay...which also included an extra 720 stick!

I had a problem where the diagonals on my Cyberball weren't working. Found out to be the rubber rings. They shouldn't be slipping off. Maybe you should just replace them? They are cheap. Here is a topic about my issue on another forum.

Got a couple on a cyberball CP I picked up... Think they're really nice sticks - my cyberball ones are microswitched.

Liked them so much I wanted to put them in my mame box but the ball top wouldn't fit through my Midway cab CP and the pins that hold the sticks in are an absolute b*tch to remove without trashing them. Ended up giving in as they're in really good condition and I couldn't face drilling them out...

Just gonna save them as spares for that Gauntlet cab I'm gonna buy one day... (although I vaguely recall gauntlet having leaf switch ones? - oh well)

Nice find on the rings. Good to know. Mine are still in ok shape (especially compared to yours - wow!) but they just dried out a little and stretched over time, causing them to slip off.

Personally, I think they are awful. I've never played a fully-rebuilt one, but there is something about the general motion or arc of motion that I don't like. Even if it were smoother, etc... I think I'd still dislike it.
