How NOT to pack PCB stacks...

This thread reminded me of a package that I received a few months back. I bought Taito and Konami board stacks from someone as 'untested' for a fairly low price including shipping. Sadly the seller used just a few pieces of crumpled newspaper and a couple of pieces of bubble wrap for protection so the stacks undoubtedly took a beating (see pics). [The large KFC cup is there simply to show the empty space.]

Anyone else have pics of bad packing to share?

FOLKS PACKAGES ARE ROUTINELY DROPPED, KICKED, BUMPED, AND THROWN BY POSTAL EMPLOYEES AND MACHINES. PLEASE use more than crumpled newspaper when packing. If you don't feel comfortable dropping a box from 4 feet onto concrete (on all sides), then you haven't packed well.

Bump N Jump Bezel that was previously in excellent condition, wrapped with some saran wrap and a few pieces of popcorn. Yes, it came in that many pieces.

Nintendo neon with a piece of cardboard "bent" around it, with no cushioning material and the metal feet were sticking out the sides.

I had a Super Qix (that turned out to be a bootleg) come from Australia. It was shipped in a box larger than the board only by about an 1" in terms of width and length but was tall enough to fit a stack of 5 or 6 of the same boards.

Packing material...one piece of bubble wrap draped over the board. Not even taped.

A guy in Ohio was brokering a bunch of boards...as I discovered. His man Australia was cheesing him. Charging him for new boxes and packing material. Box was a re-use. Guy in Australia had started to slack on shipping times. Was not knowledgeable, or just not honest, as to what the boards were. The dude in Ohio started off sort of upset at me...but eventually realized the deal.

Also had a PERFECT tube with a G07 yoke on it sent from the North East. Conneticut I think it was. Packed in a box, filled with peanuts, loosly, with the neck about 2 inches from the side. Guess how that turned out.

I have actually re-opened boxes being I was not happy with the way I wrapped it and would double check everything. The end results have always been being complimented on my package(s)..;)

Same here!

I bought a Gyruss boardset from an ebayer in the US a while ago and he shipped it across the pond to me with a single layer of bubble wrap in a loose box.

It got to me with one corner ripped off of the box and the PCBs were sticking out!

Amazingly though, the board actually worked...:001_ssuprised:

You too? I'll pack and do the "shake test"... if I hear any kind of even semi-significant movement... it gets repacked.

I do that when I pack my packages as well. But I've learned that when my wife packs them, I have to wait until she's gone to repack them or I get fussed at....

A monitor chassis I won. Bought the whole machine for pennies on the other side of the country, and the seller volunteered to strip it for me and ship everything. Thankfully this was the only board that suffered. I got another (identical) a few days later that a local seller threw in with a machine, so Karma caught up in the end.

Tales from the Crypt pin. The guy put it on a pallet and didn't strap it. It obviously fell off from a great height and landed on the headboard side which smashed the glass on the playfield and dented the siderails badly. First pic is how it was at shippers, with no pallet anymore.. I had them put it in my van as exactly as it sat because I knew something was trashed on it.. you could hear all the glass sliding around inside. You can see on the side of the machine where they promptly ran into it with the forks from a forklift. I have a pile more pics I won't bother posting but the headboard split pretty well on every joint. Shipper didn't insure even though I requested but I got a 50% payout from ship company after threatening to have my lawyer call them up. It took a bit of work but fixed up fairly well. Was a shame as it was absolutely mint to begin with.

Discs of Tron. This, along with a Warlords were dropped on their sides in transport. You can see on this machine it hit the top 'fins' when it fell off and snapped the side outward... this took the sides off the internal parts and they all fell down inside. Third pic is my first view upon cutting open the cardboard. Last pic check out how close the monitor was from coming down.. Can only imagine the sound this made when it fell over... and yet the tool used a fork to right it and just kept it on its way.. boy what a hassle this was to get money back for the damage from shipping co.

Not sure why some people think that wrapping up a large piece of glass in a couple pieces of single wall corrugated will protect it...

heh heh.. never thought of it but ya! Funny thing is is this was when I got back into collecting.. bought something like 10 games off a guy in US and had them shipped to me in Alberta. They were packaged extremely well and all strapped to the pallet.. In fact the DOT and Warlords still were strapped when they arrived. But out of all of the games I got those 2 were the most expensive/rare/desireable to me out of the lot and they are the only 2 to be damaged.. Murphy's law I guess...
