how many of you hate MAME machines?

Not sure how a multi board is a more true arcade experience? With the right front end you can do anything and never use a keyboard.
same here. i hit the power button, it boots to a menu. havent used a keyboard or mouse in years, dont even have them connected. its exactly like a multi board, except i designed it myself, so its got a better list of games and a nicer menu.

also, the vespa vs motorcycle, hey, mopeds are pretty goddamn fun to ride around on... i wouldnt mind owning one.

MAME has brought lots of people back into the hobby and overall has done way more good than harm. The comments here make it sound like people are taking mint Robotrons and hacking 4 player control panels onto them... Doesn't happen often.

I think most of the cabinets that are converted (including my 2) weren't getting restored by anyone. There were gutted and dumpster-bound if I didn't take them.
I used the MAME ROM images to bring one of my dedicated cabinets back from the dead. There was no way I would have had access to that code if not for MAME.

The xxx-in-1 comments are funny. That is MAME. If you have one of those and you're bitching about MAME, you don't have a clue! ;)

I like MAME, but I don't like seeing good dedicated cabs die for it, and I don't like playing on lack-luster controls. My thought is, if you're going to settle for "pretty close" to the original, then why the hell do you even need a cabinet? Get a joystick for the computer and play MAME that way.

If I set up a computer in an original cabinet, playing the game that is supposed to be in that cabinet, there are many games that you would never know the difference. Don't get me wrong, there are many games that still have some emulation flaws, but a vast majority of them are really good.

I have a Donkey Kong cabinet, and I also play it on the MAME cab with an original Nintendo joystick. I have played both a lot, and if the MAME setup was swapped into the DK cab, I don't think I could tell the difference.

A lot of people complain about the colors in DK running in MAME, but if you take the tinted plexi off the cab, it looks the same to me.

One of these days, I want to try running Gyruss in MAME in the dedicated cab. That one gets a lot of complaints about the sound emulation, so I want to hear what it sounds like running through the original speakers.

And they do run the original game code. It is the hardware that is emulated.

You can spot DK on mame in a heartbeat because the lack of analog sounds.

I'm going to say something that many will disagree with. I don't care... because I am right.

MAME has done more for the arcade collecting community than any other one "thing". Period.

No... I am not going to explain my logic. If you don't "get it", you "won't get it" so why would I bother?

Yeah, but the "analog" DK sounds seem like they are being played through someone's sphincter.

Gotta agree with Frizz though. My MAME cabinet was supposed to be the beginning and end to my fascination with this hobby. All they do is get you to fall in love with the games, and then you're craving the authentic experience. I've got 6 "real" cabinets now all thanks to MAME.

It depends on what you are doing it to. Right now, I am in the process of MAMEing a former touch screen cabinet that nobody cared about. Yes, it was a dedicated game but it didn't work and was not a great game to start with. I wouldn't do that to a classic.

I used to be really against MAME machines but didn't mind playing it on my PC. It took me about 10 years before I decided to build one but, if you do it right, you won't destroy anything precious.

No... you're playing them through a nice sound system so they sound "wrong". Play them through a dedicated DK cabinet/single speaker and come back and tell me how "off" they sound.

Right now it's the lack of space that makes me want to MAME something. I'm in the process of MAMEing the MKII I picked up recently. It had no monitor, no board, a GT golf marquee, the sides were painted black, and the CP was drilled to shit for the GT golf conversion. So, what I am doing is basically bringing it back to look like a MKII. I've citristripped the sides(graphics still look amazing), put new t-molding, I have a 27" VGA EYGO that's going in there, and getting the MKII marquee. So far so good right? Now I just have to make a new CP top BUT drilled for 6 buttons...and I can't use the original CPO image. So I figured either the red or blue lightning CPO from gameongfx would look good. Technically i'm not destroying anything because it's already been done for me :D

I have had a MAME cab for about 7 years now, love it and wouldn't change a thing.

My cab is old Captain America 4P that an OP stripped to nothing and was about to destroy. Stupid thing is that it was in great shape, he just didn't want it. Even worse was he made my pay for it or he was going to trash -- dumb!

I bought it and had someone mame it out for me as a gift for my wife (I knew nothing about mameing at the time).

From that one cabinet its been 7 year whirlwind of vids and pins parading through our house. It was because of our mame cab that we ended up with a game room.

Now unfortunately due to space issues I cannot have a bunch of stand-alones (which I would prefer) so the MAME cab is the perfect second choice. I don't feel that the controls are "second rate" compared to the arcade "originals" in any way. Sure my guns don't have recoil, sure my joystick is not a true 4 way for pac etc, sure I don't have a flight stick for zaxxon but you know what I can say ... I get to play these games in my home on a nice cabinet with quality controls and me and my family love it.

My kids never got to experience and arcade (nor have their friends) so this is as close as they will get. I can tell you not one kid that comes to my house and sees our stuff -- says yuck this isn't a real DK or Pac or whatever. All they do is get wide eyed and go wow this is awesome. Every arcade now is big buck hunter, driving games, and 9,000 redemption/ticket games that's it.

I am a proud MAME owner and have no problem admitting it.

I've always wanted a home arcade, an impulse buy of an Ultracade from a yard sale started the whole thing. First I talked the wife into letting me buy it under the guise that I could resell it for more money, second I talked her into letting me put it in the living room where she ended up playing it. That opened her up to allowing me to purchase more games and convert the garage. I sold the Ultracade because of all the negative things I read about them on the web and set off on my MAME quest. There are certain games that will be purchased eventually, I want a Star Wars BAD and I will have one at some point. I also love racing games so there are going to be a few of those in the collection.

Love my MAME, first off I get to play games that I normally would have never dropped a quarter in. I do like the original cabs for specific games like vectors.

speaking of WTFCADES...here's a new one for my area - http://longisland.craigslist.org/vgm/2629148391.html

I love my MAME cabinet - built from scratch and stands next to an authentic Tempest, Zaxxon and Centipede with a DK across the room.

But that (above) is why a lot of people hate MAME'ers. What a travesty.

The analogy comparing arcade cabs to classic cars was good as well.

But Friz's statement stands truer than any other. Emulation and MAME have literally saved classic arcade gaming from virtual extinction. Like anything though, its misuse is painful to behold.

I'm guessing you've not played with MAME in a while... DK stopped using samples about 2 years ago...

I know, it's gotten better but they're still using digital emulation to try to recreate analog sounds, and it doesn't sound "right". It's like all the software emulations of Roland 808s, moogs, etc. Synths and drum machines in the 70's and 80s sounded warm and fat for a reason.

Real analog sound circuitry has a certain character to it. It's actually the imperfections that give it that character. For the most part, no 2 DKs sound exactly alike. My 4-board stack sounds different than my 2-board stack. They all sound a little different but they all sound kind of wonky.

I know most people don't care about it, I like that analog wonkyness though. That's one of the main things that I remember about playing back in the day.

Agreed. I have my MAME setup in a DK cab that was gutted. I am in the process of getting it back to a DK but I enjoy it now with MAME until I find a monitor and boardset. I connected the original speaker to a hacked USB powered speaker and it sounds so much better than when it was hooked up directly to the USB speakers.
