Hey fellas, Does anyone know how many buttons are required to play certain icade jammas ?
For example how many buttons does it take for the flow and functionality of the game to properly work?

19-1 ?
60-1 ?
138-1 ?( neo geo )
276-1 ? (version 1 )
352-1 ? (Version 1 )
2019-1 ? (King Multigame)
465-1 ? (babystar Vertical )
Blue elf 2 ?
150-1 ? (Neo Geo)
161-1 ? (Neo Geo)

If anyone can post , that would be very useful for a reference point..
Thanks

Well, to be able to play all of the NeoGeo multi-cart games, you would need 4 buttons. Of course, the majority of the non-fighter games on those carts usually use 1 or 2 buttons with a few using 3. All of the fighters use 4 buttons.

Jamma supports up to 3 buttons per player. Anything more will require a kick harness.

Not necessarily. The JAMMA standard may only have 3 buttons, but there are unused pins in the connector, which could be (and were) used for additional buttons (25/26/c/d).

A fully loaded Jamma harness is set for 5 buttons per player, kick harness only required for additional button(s).

And for the initial question, to fully play anything on that particular board per player:

19-1 ? = 5 buttons minimal/6 buttons optimal
60-1 ? = 3 buttons
138-1 ?( neo geo ) = 4 buttons
276-1 ? (version 1 ) = 4 buttons
352-1 ? (Version 1 ) = 4 buttons
2019-1 ? (King Multigame) = 6 buttons
465-1 ? (babystar Vertical ) = 4 buttons
Blue elf 2 ? = 6 buttons
150-1 ? (Neo Geo) = 4 buttons
161-1 ? (Neo Geo) = 4 buttons

Unless the board has games like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, ect, there is no need for a 5th or 6th button. The Neo Geo I didn't look too deep into it, just referenced what others mentioned in this thread.

On a 19 - 1 board are the butons used for fire in Robotron or can another joystick be added for that?

robotron is unlike berzerk in that the enemy dynamics can't be managed with 1 joystick and using the button to fire in the direction of movement.

the 2nd joystick is used for firing input (8 way)

Is the second joystick hooked to the player 2 input or is it hooked into the same point as the buttons?

the second joystick goes into the player 2 U D L R inputs. the software knows to use the joystick for firing input.

usually in your setup you'll indicate if there are 2 joysticks available.

atari 7800 works the same way. if you play robotron with 1 joystick it acts like berzerk. if you plug in the 2nd joystick it does dual joystick action.

If you hook up 2 joysticks and choose the 2 joystick option will the other games try to use the second joystick as player 2 joystick? Or will it use the joystick 1 for both?

If you're trying to play a 2 player simultaneous game, then player two goes to player two joystick. If you're playing one player games like PacMan, Centipede, Dig Dug, ect... it will play only on the player 1 controls.

I hate to ask so many questions but I am trying something new.

Will this idea work?
On a 19-1 board only stargate/defender us all the buttons and they alternate players. I only have room for 6 buttons. If I hook player 1 buttons 5 & 6 up to player 2 buttons 1 & 2 inputs also. Can I then play Joust as a 2 player game. Basicly using buttons 5 & 6 twice?
