How many buttons for a 60 in 1?

I used 3 buttons.

Only because the 3rd button is a handy button when programming the menu mainly

It can be hidden, doesn't have to be on the control panel though

:)

This is my first 48 in 1 cab, I kinda like the 3 button colors also :)

Yeah I think only gunsmoke and arkanoid use the 3rd buttons but it's not required.
Putting the 3rd button inside the coin door or something like that works well for the occasional setup changes.

I'd use 2 if doing a two player simultaneous cab and 3 if doing a one player at a time cab. Preferably no more than a total of four control buttons on the panel.

My MAME has six per player and a trackball (before I get flamed, it's not in 17 colors and the panel is considerably smaller than what you normally see). I would not do that again. Given the money and time I would much rather build 4 or so cabs with single or dual purpose controls rather than do the 1990's thing with all the controls you ever need. And I'd theme the cabs to my favorite game (no multi artwork). For example, my trackball cab would be a Centipede replica, the sinner would be a Tempest cab or given expense, generic cab patterned after Arkanoid and for a single stick cab - a Midway type Galaga or Ms. Pac style cab. But that gets very pricey very fast!

But for a single 60 in 1 I'd keep it as simple as possible on the outside and anything saved on controls I'd invest in a good, working coin door and wire that baby in even if all I did was open the door and flip the coin switch for parties.

So, basically, the difference between using 2 or 3 buttons is really the level of Gun Smoke play-purist you are, right?

My 60-in-1 turmoil is whether to include and/or how to fit a trackball. Centipede isn't the same, even with an 8-way joy, is it? Centi and 1942 are unplayable with a 4-way, imho. Which is why I plan on using a Mag Stik Plus. But having a trackball as well would make it better.

But I also prefer buttons on either side of the controls for righties and lefties.

Centi and milli are unplayable IMO without a trackball. Gotta have more trackball. ;)

I rarely will make a 60-in1 with 3 buttons anymore unless I am running LED buttons and trackballs, in which case the extra button looks good on the panel.

I once made a really high end 60 in a fully restored ms. Pac cab. I gambled that the potential buyer who would be interested in paying the price for such a nice cab wouldn't give two shits about all the two button games like Xevious, 1943, etc. So I drilled and installed a single button on each side of the Pink 4-way stick for the true classics. The gamble paid off and the machine sold... For alot.

Mines got three because of gunsmoke. One of the most played games on mine
You're a trouble-maker. :)

I haven't tried the 2-button version of Gun Smoke. The direction you're facing dictates the gun fire concentration, doesn't it? Does the 3rd button make THAT much of a difference? I need button closure.

If I can escape from the wife-n-kids later, I hope finally finish my 60-in-1-in-a-Centi project and will finally have an educated opinion. My 19-in-1-in-a-Joust only has 2 buttons. *blush* but I don't care for Defender/Stargate much.

Gunsmoke sucks without 3 buttons.

the way gunsmoke works with 3 buttons is each button is a direction regardless of where your looking
.......................... 2
Mine are set up as 1 3 (2 is a little higher than 1 and 3, not a full on triangle)

And button 2 shoots in front, button 1 is to the left and 3 is to the right. If i hit 1 and 2 together i get a left diagonal, same reversed for 2 and 3. Also I can hit 1 and 3 and get a shot in both diagonal directions (one gun a piece though)

Yeah, coincidentally, my pac-man resto project was actually converted to a Gun Smoke (came with COmmando pcb too!) and I designed a new cpo to accommodate the layout for 60-in-1 ... but no trackball. So I'm undecided.

Don't forget that the programming must be changed If using a two button control panel. Gun smoke is automatically set to 3 button, you will need to change it to 1 in programming.
