Is the phosphorous technically always in a state of "burn in?" If not, how frequently would the screen's image have to be changed before the damage becomes irreversible? For example, If I were to leave Punch-Out in attract mode, how long before I would notice burn in on the top monitor? Would turning it off say every hour "reset" the burn in, or over time is it still inevitable?

Over time, it is inevitable, I'd say, but that all depends on how often you have it on.

I've seen games with attract screens that change every few seconds have slightly-noticeable burn-in after as little as 6 months if the game is left on for long periods every day (like in a bar where it's on for 10-24 hours/day).

And I have a no-burn monitor in my Robotron that still has no burn-in after 2 years, but that's because I only turn it on when I want to play it. I don't leave it on...

I know a guy that keeps a xevious on 24/7 and the burn is only slightly noticeable on the xevious name in attract mode. I guess since everything else scrolls during attract that prevents the burn.

The happ kj1915 monitor I put in there over 2 years ago is still going strong. The old original matsushita had a bad tube when I went to repair it. Chassis still works, but the tube is shot. So if anything, I would say leaving the game on a long time only sacrifices the tube.
