How long did it take you to get the hang of using abbreviated names???

Do you all still have to think about them or do they just pop out at you... this is still challenging me... apparently I've not spent enough time in the pinball world for this to be natural yet. ;)

I used to think it was only 13 year old kids who loved using the abbreviations.

I've been playing pinball for 25 years but I'm still new to owning my own machine and in turn researching others, no idea what half of the abbreviations are. A bit annoying but I guess I'll get used to them.

At first I had no idea what anyone was talking about when I started reading RGP and such when I got my first pin. I would find myself looking up abbreviations constantly, but after awhile you see them enough to start getting them. Of course if there was a test on them I would probably fail, but I know enough to usually keep up, and if not there is a cheat sheet.

I think their rather taken to an anal retentive level...

I mean we can't type out the entire name? Have to use AFM all the time? I'd like to know who started all of this if I could. Sure, its shorter to use the abreviations, but when you go to a site and people basically insist you use them, it gets old... Or when you are new.

There are games that have the same letters too, so its flawed. My Corvette machine, I suppse would be CV. But I guess since its not an A list game, CV is reserved for some other game. (I digress)

For current/very recent pins (e.g. BBH, SM...) I think the abbreviations are OK and you get used to them quickly. For anything older or even slightly obscure, I tend to type the full name once and then use the abbreviation. I wish others would do the same, as many times I am simply stumped.

if you're starting a thread, i think it's common courtesy to put the full name of the pin in either the thread title or the first post.

after that, i think it's perfectly fine to abbreviate.....especially if it's a common pin (common abbreviation).

I don't use abbreviations. Cant stand it, is it that hard to type the full name at least once in a post? Lazy people!!

You have 4 abbreviations in your signature haha.....

I don't care if people use them, everyone does on RGP (rec.games.pinball for those of you who hate abbreviations), so I got used to it, doesn't bother me one bit.

Never have to think of them any more... I'd say it took 6 months of reading RGP to memorize most of them. When it comes down to it there's just not that many popular pinball machines or very many models made, and new models are added extremely slowly. I thought it would be hard at first but it didn't take long at all.
