I just put a new HV unit in my Asteroids Deluxe cabaret's 15V2000. I was tuning it up (HV, brightness, contrast, focus) and noticed the bottom of the monitor frame was _HOT_!!!

My calibrated finger said it was at least 85C. I didn't think to do a spit test before I shut it down, but I'd guess it was under 100C.

I know the deflection transistors get hot, and it had been running for maybe an hour, but still...that seems way too hot for normal operation. Especially since the back door and the front plexi were off the cabinet.

So how hot is too hot?

I can't speak for the 15", but I always replace the thermal compound on my monitors, and for the 19" v2000, even after doing so, I would say the frame gets warm, but not hot.

Maybe swap out your frame transistors, and check the supply voltage to start. Is it the HV unit getting hot, or do you think it's the frame transistors?

The bottom was hotter than the sides, so I'm going to say it's the transistors.

A couple of years ago, I recapped the monitor but I don't think I replaced the frame transistors. ("If it ain't broke...") It's been running fine ever since. But I don't know if it was running this hot or not.

This summer, I accidentally left the game on for a couple of days. The HV unit was dead when I came back. I finally gave up and replaced the HV unit this week. Now I'm worried about the heat. It's definitely beyond what I'd call "warm".

I think I have some spare transistors lying around. I'll replace them and see if that helps.
