Mine, no matter how fast I push the button, I can only have two "bullets" on the screen at the same time. Since I've gotten mine I've played a few out in the wild and it seems like they just steadily stream bullets. Is this a setting or is it just because I have a bootleg?

theres a little board in there that switches the speed

The little board inside turns "rapid fire" on or off, but the two bullet limit is still in place, and the bullet speed is the same, it just lets you hold down the button like centipede

There is a rom mod that does "fast bullets" but still has the two bullet limit

Best, get the "Galaga enhancement pack" and you can select fast or slow, and use the little board to select auto fire or not

Thats just galaga, just like centipede is 1 bullet on the screen at a time, they both need some precise bullet timing and arent played like a modern schmup

I kinda like the slow ass bullets on mine. Training with a "handicap" makes me better when I play the fast ones in the wild.

Two bullets per screen with no fast bullet setting is the way to play Galaga. Try Galaxian with one slow ass bullet on the screen at a time. That's a challenge (and a better game IMO.)

I have the enhancement pack and its pretty fun to have different options.

I like playing it the hard way but if you get good at it your arm can take a beating hitting the fire button 45,000 times in a row.

I always hated button mashers.

Is the rapid fire board factory? I always thought that it was an 'enhancement' sold to ops.

I thought it was factory but I think the manual would probably indicate that one way or the other.

I never saw any Galaga back in the day with this feature turned on. Even today whenever I run into this game on location the rapid fire is turned off. Why would it be turned on? It makes the game last longer and that means less money for the operator. Same thing for the Ms Pac speed up. Why would an operator use it? These games were already hugely popular and provided a relatively long period of game play for the average person compared to other games of the era.

As I recall in the case of Asteriods Deluxe, the original game was too hard, and that was thought to be a reason why it was not doing well, so they made a revision to make the game easier.

The Ms. pac-Man speed hack definitely makes them more money. If you don't have the fast speed, each board takes twice as long... and the boards don't get hard until later on... so that means you just sold somebody 15 minutes of gaming for a quarter. Every time they play it.
