How far should a game be from a speaker?

I'm trying a number of new arrangements for my combination tv/stereo/exercise (treadmill)/arcade room tonight.

I have some old-school but still very nice Polk Audio Monitor 10 speakers in the room (10" woofers, I think). They are the older style "boxy" speakers from about 1990 with presumably large magnets in them (unshielded, I'm betting). Rears are Polk Monitor 5Bs, the somewhat smaller but still kick-ass cousin of the 10s.

I'm trying to shoe-horn in one more arcade game but don't want to get any of my games too close to these speakers because I like my monitors to not have that colorful rainbow hue to them.

So what would minimum distances be to guarantee no damage/impact to the games from these probably unshielded speakers?

Thoughts?

I would assume , once you have everything in place , you would then degause your game monitor anyway [ degausing wand ] , most arcade cabs tend to like North South , .

But once degaused i would not think your stereo speakers would make any difference , I dont think you could get them THAT close to your monitor .

Anybody else on this ?

Kind of a moot point now because I don't think I can fit another cab in my gameroom but I can see the effect of a degaussing coil on my monitor as much as 7-10' away from the game.

I don't know how powerful the magnetic field of the degaussing coil is compared to the large magnets in the speakers but you can certainly see the degaussing coil effects from a long ways away!

3 feet away from a stereo speaker?

just incase you dont know how to de-gauss

is your wand a quality wand ? price will dictate this

Get everything in place , turn the monitor on , and then plug your wand in , then whilst it is some 3-4 feet away fom the cab , turn it on , and bring it towards the moitor , slow to medium speed , in say foot wide circles , get right near the tube , but dont touch it , then bring the circles back out say 2-3 ft then turn it off ,

This is the technique i use , i think it is propper , from memory , and you should get rid of all magnetisim.

If someone disagrees with this method , please post your technique , i am going off years ago , when my tech showed me how , [ my brain might need a de-gauss too ! }

I've seen the speakers in games interfere with other games before. Friend of mine had a Road Blasters, and when it was next to Ms. Pac, it would cause distortion in the lower left corner of the monitor of Ms. Pac, regardless of whether Road Blasters was on or not. The bottom of the monitor was just in line with the speakers in Road Blasters. It would not quite degauss out, either - not until he sold the Road Blasters.

It's hard to say in your environment. Just try it, and see if it causes problems. The magnetic field isn't great enough to damage anything.
