Ive never attempted to remove the neckboard before I always just recap with it attached. In this case I dont think Im going to be able to fix the monitor and I would like to send it off for repair. My question is it a connector that can be wiggled off or do I have to unsolder it. Model in question is # WGM 3976-U2GS27B (K7600)

Wells-Gardner secures the neckboard's picture tube socket to the tube by a glob of silicone glue. Take a razor blade or x-acto knife and carefully cut through the silicone glue around the socket. Now you can slowly & carefully pull the neckboard off the tube.

Just checked and there is no glue mayb they didnt use this practice on the newer models.

Or someone has already removed it at some point. Just pull the neckboard straight back off the pins without tilting it....

Thanks for the quick replies guys. This stuff makes me nervous the first few times.

Specialized tool to do just what you need:

(Sorry, could not resist. Go with ken and mod.)

it's kind of scary, considering the neck is just made of glass. it's probably NOT the proper practice but I kinda wiggle (VERY LIGHTLY) the neckboard forward and back while I pull it off, making sure that it's still standing straight up just before I pull it off.

I just feel wrong pulling straight back on it. "rocking the pins" is what I call this.

just make sure you get it back on right. it's keyed so that you can't screw it up, but I think with some finesse you can still screw it up. :)

Heres hoping its an easy repair.

Hopefully you got that thing off OK. If it seems real tight, it's just been on a looooooooooooooooooooong time. These are made to be removed, so with enough pull, you can remove it.

I had a Sharp Image 27" the other night I had to play with, and the little sucker was on tight! I just grabbed the outside edge of the board and applied about the same amount of pull as trying to remove one of those child safety caps out of a wall socket, and it gave away finally.

I use the same method. I'm paranoid that I'll crack the board.

I guess there's no major harm in it if you do it gently and make sure you're not yanking the board off at a weird angle.

Going to take the chassis off tommorow and ship it off to arcadecup.com wish me luck guys.

Is it best practice to discharge prior to taking a neck board off? if only servicing a pot on the neckboard? there IS a cap on there that i guess could hold a not so friendly charge...

I don't know if it's strictly necessary, but I do and would recommend discharging before removing the neckboard. It takes 30 seconds of your time, why not do it and be safe?

From what I heard is the monitor can discharge through the neck. I just discharge the damn things everytime doesnt take but a minute.

I'm definitely not being lazy about it, just that i didn't have my 'discharge equipment' with me when i posed the question.
